Did you know that doctors and nurses spend over a third of their work week buried in paperwork? We're talking about maintaining detailed patient records, filling out insurance forms, writing up referrals, documenting procedures, organizing claim documentation, and entering claim info into the system. A recent study by Google Cloud and The Harris Poll really shines a light on how heavy this paperwork load is—and guess what? It also shows how generative AI (gen AI) could be a game-changer.
Clinicians in the US, including doctors and nurses, say they're losing nearly 28 hours each week to these admin tasks, which means less time for what really counts: taking care of patients. No surprise then that a whopping 82% of clinicians feel burned out. And it's not just a doctor thing; insurance staff are dealing with an even bigger pile of paperwork, clocking in about 36 hours a week on admin duties like keeping member records and prepping claim documentation.
Burnout, Errors, and Less Time with Patients
This paperwork overload is causing some major headaches in healthcare:
- Burnout and Staffing Shortages: A huge 82% of clinicians, 81% of medical staff, and 77% of claims staff say that admin work is driving them to burnout. Plus, 85% of provider execs and 78% of insurance company (payor) execs agree that too much admin work is leading to staffing shortages.
- Less Time with Patients: Eight out of ten providers say admin tasks are stealing time away from patients, and 68% think it's hurting the quality of care. This view is shared by 93% of clinicians, 88% of medical staff, and 94% of claims staff, who all believe they could spend more time with patients if they didn't have so much admin work.
- Increased Risk of Human Error: Two-thirds of providers and a whopping 89% of payors are seriously worried about mistakes in admin tasks, with 22% and 49% respectively feeling "extremely" concerned.
Generative AI Solutions
But there's hope on the horizon with gen AI. The study found that healthcare pros are pretty open to using AI, with 91% of providers and 97% of payors feeling good about AI's potential to lighten the admin load. Even the public is on board, with 72% saying using AI in healthcare is a smart move to give their providers more time to chat with them. Here's how gen AI can help:
- Easier Searches: It can make searching through patient documents and medical records a breeze.
- Clinical Document Creation: AI can whip up clinical documents like discharge summaries, progress notes, and referral letters, letting clinicians focus on reviewing and finalizing them.
- Faster Prior Authorizations: By filling out forms ahead of time, flagging potential issues, and suggesting relevant guidelines, AI can speed up the approval process.
- Quicker Medical Imaging Turnaround: AI can draft initial reports, freeing up radiologists to tackle the tough cases and collaborate better.
While AI can't replace the human touch and expertise in healthcare, it can definitely support healthcare pros, letting them focus more on people than paperwork. By easing the admin burden, AI can help build a more efficient, accurate, and patient-focused healthcare system.

Gen AI has been a lifesaver for us at the clinic. It cuts down on the paperwork so much, but sometimes it messes up the details. Still, it's better than nothing, right? Maybe they could work on the accuracy a bit more?

Gen AI has been a lifesaver for us in the medical field! It cuts down the endless paperwork so we can focus more on patient care. Sometimes it misses small details, but overall, it's a huge help. Wish it could handle more complex forms though!
