OpenAI Enhances AI Voice Assistant for Better Chats
OpenAI rolled out some cool updates on Monday for their Advanced Voice Mode in ChatGPT, making the AI voice feature more user-friendly and less interruptive. Manuka Stratta, a post-training researcher at OpenAI, shared the news in a video that hit the company's social media channels on Monday.
The goal with this update? To fix a common annoyance with AI voice assistants—they tend to jump in when you're just pausing to think or take a breath. Now, free users of ChatGPT can use a new version of Advanced Voice Mode that lets you take a break without the AI butting in. And if you're a paying user—whether you're on Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, or Pro—you'll also face fewer interruptions. Plus, the voice assistant's personality got a bit of a facelift, making it more enjoyable to chat with.
An OpenAI spokesperson dished to TechCrunch that their updated AI voice assistant for paying customers is now "more direct, engaging, concise, specific, and creative in its answers."
These tweaks to Advanced Voice Mode are happening as the competition in the AI voice assistant world heats up. Take Sesame, for instance—a startup backed by Andreessen Horowitz and founded by Oculus co-founder Brendan Iribe. They've been making waves with their natural-sounding AI voices, Maya and Miles. And don't forget the big guns like Amazon, who are gearing up to launch their LLM-powered version of Alexa.

La mise à jour de l'assistant vocal d'OpenAI est plutôt cool ! La conversation semble plus naturelle maintenant, moins comme parler à un robot. Je l'ai utilisé pour planifier mon week-end et les suggestions étaient parfaites. J'aimerais juste qu'il puisse gérer des requêtes plus complexes. Malgré tout, c'est un grand pas en avant !

OpenAI's voice assistant update is pretty slick! The chat feels more natural now, less like talking to a robot. I used it to plan my weekend and it was spot on with suggestions. Only wish it could handle more complex queries. Still, it's a big step up!
