We had a blast at Google I/O this year, and we know it can be overwhelming with all the exciting announcements! To kick off our I/O Connect event series in a fun way, we decided to bring back some of the coolest tools we showcased at I/O through a unique activity: The I/O Crossword! This isn't your typical crossword puzzle; it's a fun twist that challenges your I/O knowledge while letting you experience the capabilities of Flutter, Firebase, and the Gemini API firsthand.
How to Play the I/O Crossword
Here's how you can dive into the fun:
- First, pick a team represented by one of our four mascots. Your choice will color-code your solved words on the board.
- Then, select a spot on the board to start solving.
- If you find yourself stuck on a word, hit the "ask for a hint" button for some help.
- The more words you solve consecutively, the higher you and your team will climb on the leaderboard!
How We Built the I/O Crossword with the Gemini API
Creating the I/O Crossword was an adventure in itself. We used Gemini Advanced to analyze both keynotes from Google I/O this year, asking it to generate content for a crossword that's both topical and tech-focused. This resulted in 320 words and clues that make learning about I/O announcements enjoyable.
We then integrated this AI-generated content into the game using our developer tools: Flutter, Dart, Firebase, Project IDX, Google Chrome, and Google Cloud. These tools helped us craft the game interface and mechanics, making the experience smooth and engaging.
We also incorporated an AI-powered hint feature. We all know that feeling when a word is just out of reach, or the clue isn't quite doing it for you. Instead of turning to Google Search, we've built the AI assistance right into the game. It provides just the right nudge to keep your brain engaged and the satisfaction flowing when you finally solve the puzzle.
The I/O Crossword is designed to spark your creativity and inspire you to think about how you might use the Gemini API to enhance classic experiences or create entirely new ones. If you have a brilliant idea, you have until August 12, 2024, to submit your project to the Gemini API Developer Competition.
