Microsoft Unveils AI-Generated Quake Version

Microsoft kicked off its Xbox AI journey earlier this year with the introduction of the Muse AI model, which has the cool ability to generate gameplay. Initially, it seemed like Muse was just a project in the Microsoft Research labs, but now, Xbox fans can get a taste of it through Copilot, thanks to an AI-generated version of *Quake II*.
This tech demo is part of Microsoft's push with Copilot for Gaming, and it lets you play an AI-generated version of *Quake II* right in your browser. Now, don't expect too much—the level is pretty basic, with blurry enemies and interactions. Plus, Microsoft's put a time limit on how long you can play this demo.
When Microsoft first showed off Muse, it was running at a sluggish 10fps and a tiny 300 x 180 resolution. But this new demo? It's a bit smoother, running at a playable frame rate and a slightly better resolution of 640 x 360. Still, it's a limited experience, more of a teaser for what could be coming down the road.
Microsoft's still pitching Muse as a tool for game developers to prototype games. Back in February, when they unveiled Muse, they also talked about using this AI model to breathe new life into classic games like *Quake II* and make them work on today's hardware.
Phil Spencer, the head honcho at Microsoft Gaming, said in February, "You could imagine a world where from gameplay data and video, a model could learn old games and really make them portable to any platform where these models could run. We've talked about game preservation as an activity for us, and these models and their ability to learn completely how a game plays without the necessity of the original engine running on the original hardware opens up a ton of opportunity."
It's pretty clear that Microsoft's been busy training Muse on more than just *Bleeding Edge*. We're likely to see more of these short, interactive AI game experiences popping up in Copilot Labs soon. And that's not all—Microsoft's also working on turning Copilot into a game coach, where the AI assistant can watch what you're playing and give you tips and guides. Windows Insiders will get to try out part of this experience through Copilot Vision soon.

Microsoft's AI-generated Quake version is pretty cool, but it feels a bit too much like a tech demo. The gameplay is innovative, but I miss the classic feel of Quake. Maybe they should focus on blending the old with the new a bit more. Still, it's a fun experiment!

Microsoft's AI-generated Quake version is pretty cool! I love how Muse can create gameplay, it's like stepping into the future. The only downside is that it's still a bit clunky, but hey, it's a start. Can't wait to see what they do next with Xbox AI!
