CodeSignal Launches AI Guide for Soft Skills Practice
Startups and major tech companies are increasingly turning to AI to assist developers in coding or enhancing their programming skills. Meanwhile, individuals are using chatbots to prepare for various life scenarios, such as job interviews. CodeSignal, a tech assessment platform that rolled out an AI-assisted learning platform for technical subjects last year, has now introduced soft skills courses. These courses allow users to practice different professional skills and navigate work-life scenarios.
CodeSignal believes that traditionally, only top executives could afford the high costs of hiring an executive coach for leadership and communication training. By leveraging various AI models, the company has developed a learning and practice system that makes these coaching skills accessible to everyone.
Tigran Sloyan, CEO of CodeSignal, mentioned that companies often hire a significant number of non-technical staff. This presented an opportunity to train these individuals in various aspects of their professional lives.
"With the progress in generative AI, we identified a chance to delve into a broad range of soft skills, including leadership training, sales training, and negotiation tactics. We believe in the power of hands-on learning, which is why we're expanding into this new area after our technical training success," Sloyan explained.
CodeSignal has launched over 100 courses covering topics such as conducting effective one-on-one meetings, strategic leadership assessment, behavioral profile assessment, sales skills evaluation, and enhancing public speaking abilities.
Users can choose from these courses or request the AI assistant to find and help them practice different scenarios. You can engage with the AI character using voice commands during simulations. CodeSignal opted to develop its own voice technology instead of using existing solutions like ElevenLabs' conversational agent platform, believing it would be more cost-effective in the long run. After your conversation, the AI assistant provides tips and highlights areas for improvement.

Upon successfully completing practices and courses, users advance through different competency levels, categorized as developing, intermediate, advanced, and expert.
For enterprises, CodeSignal offers customized courses tailored to a company's specific knowledge base and cultural values. Sloyan noted that companies can choose AI characters with varying personalities to simulate real-life situations.
However, there's a concern about incorporating cultural sensitivity into these courses. Without it, the training might not resonate well with employees.
Sumit Singla, an HR consultant based in India, pointed out that AI might recommend assertiveness, which could be inappropriate in certain cultural contexts.
"AI might advocate for 'radical candor' in feedback, but in cultures that favor indirect communication, this could be counterproductive. The tool may not understand humor, sarcasm, or culturally specific expressions, leading to awkward or incorrect responses in training," Singla said.
He believes AI can be helpful for practicing skills in a low-stress environment, but it may lack emotional intelligence or contextual awareness in some cases.
"In training, we often practice 'reading the room.' AI can't adapt to different personalities, work environments, or leadership styles. Soft skills development is very personalized, and AI might not always provide context-aware feedback," Singla observed.
Sloyan acknowledged that while CodeSignal tries to integrate cultural and personality context when working with clients, it's an ongoing process. The company also creates cultural templates when expanding into new regions.
CodeSignal, supported by Menlo Ventures and Index Ventures, is not alone in this venture. Microsoft LinkedIn has also explored AI-powered tools for soft skills training. CodeSignal mainly interacts with users through its website, with plans to launch iOS and Android apps later this year to broaden its reach.
