Apple Retail Pioneer Questions AI Shopping Agents: Consumers Won't Fully Trust Machines
Ron Johnson, who spearheaded Apple’s retail operations in its early days, argues that despite tech giants pouring billions into “agent-based commerce,” AI agents will not supplant the in-store experience for physical goods. Johnson, 66, joined Apple in 2000 to build its retail division and establish the physical store network that became central to Apple’s sales and customer service.

Google is advancing AI agents via the Universal Commerce Protocol to streamline product discovery, comparison, and checkout, while OpenAI is transforming ChatGPT into a shopping platform.
Johnson notes that consumers are unlikely to let AI agents autonomously purchase a $1,000 to $2,000 laptop without hands-on experience. He argues that buyers still want to feel the device’s weight, inspect the screen, and gauge its size. AI is better suited to help users narrow options and gather information beforehand, turning store visitors into more informed buyers.
Johnson explains that Apple’s retail stores were designed not just for sales, but to offer product experiences, education, and after-sales support. He attributes the success of Apple’s retail business to its employees and their service model, such as commission-free staff who focus on understanding user needs rather than pushing sales. After leaving Apple, Johnson led JC Penney and founded Enjoy Technology, which filed for bankruptcy in 2022.
While cautious about AI reshopping habits, Johnson remains optimistic about the technology, suggesting Steve Jobs would have embraced it without letting it replace human judgment. “Human intuition is irreplaceable,” he states, viewing AI as a supportive tool rather than a complete substitute for consumer decision-making.
