Amazon's Alexa AI Assistant Expands to Web Browsing
Amazon's AI-enhanced digital assistant, now called Alexa+, is expanding to the web. At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the company announced the official launch of a new website, Alexa.com, which is now being made available to all Alexa+ Early Access customers. The site enables users to interact with Alexa+ online, similar to using other AI chatbots like ChatGPT or Google's Gemini.
While Alexa-powered devices, such as Amazon's Echo smart speakers and displays, have a massive global footprint with over 600 million units sold, Amazon believes its AI assistant must be ubiquitous to stay competitive—not just in homes, but also on mobile phones and the web.
This expansion could eventually allow anyone to use Alexa+, even without a dedicated device at home.
As part of this rollout, Amazon is updating its Alexa mobile app to provide a more "agent-forward" experience. Essentially, the app's homepage now features a chatbot-style interface, making it resemble a standard AI chatbot. (Although chatting was possible before, it is now the primary focus, with other features taking a secondary role.)

However, Amazon seeks to set its assistant apart by concentrating on families and home-centric needs. This includes controlling smart home devices—a core feature of the original Alexa—as well as managing family calendars and to-do lists, booking restaurant reservations, adding grocery items to an Amazon Fresh or Whole Foods cart, finding and saving recipes, and planning family movie nights with personalized suggestions.
Amazon has recently integrated more third-party services into Alexa+, including Angi, Expedia, Square, and Yelp, which join existing partners like Fodor's, OpenTable, Suno, Ticketmaster, Thumbtack, and Uber.
The Alexa.com website includes a navigation sidebar for quick access to frequently used features, allowing users to resume tasks such as adjusting the thermostat, checking upcoming appointments, reviewing shopping lists, and more.

This includes tracking children's school holidays and sports schedules, doctor's appointments, and other family reminders—such as a pet's last vaccination or a neighbor's barbecue.
This presents a challenge for Amazon, as it lacks its own productivity software or the depth of personal user data that competitors like Google possess. Instead, Amazon has developed tools for forwarding and uploading files to Alexa+, allowing the AI to organize this information. This functionality is now available on Alexa.com, and shared data can also be viewed and managed on Echo Show screens.
If executed well, this capability to manage a family's personal information could become Alexa's most compelling advantage.
"Seventy-six percent of what customers are doing with Alexa+ cannot be done by any other AI," says Daniel Rausch, Amazon's Vice President of Alexa and Echo, in an interview with TechCrunch. "That's a significant statistic for two reasons."
He adds, "First, because customers rely on Alexa for unique tasks. For example, you can send a photo of a handwritten family recipe to Alexa, then have it guide you through the cooking process, suggest ingredient substitutions based on what you have at home, and help you complete the dish."
However, he notes that the remaining 24% of use cases overlap with other AIs, which may indicate users are gradually shifting more of their AI interactions to Alexa+.

Image Credits:Amazon Initially, Alexa.com will be exclusive to Early Access customers who sign in with their Amazon account. Amazon has been progressively expanding this Early Access program since Alexa+ was first introduced last year.
Rausch states that tens of millions of consumers now have access to Alexa+, and they are engaging in two to three times more conversations with it compared to the original Alexa. Specifically, shopping via Alexa+ has tripled, and recipe usage has increased fivefold. Users who heavily rely on smart home features also use Alexa+ 50% more for home automation control than they did with the classic Alexa.
Despite some online complaints about Alexa+ errors and inaccuracies, Rausch believes these are overemphasized. He reports that the average opt-out rate after trying Alexa+ is in the low single digits—effectively near zero.
"Ninety-seven percent of Alexa devices support Alexa+, and we see strong adoption across all device generations," Rausch adds. "We have maintained all of Alexa's original capabilities, and the tens of thousands of existing integrations and services carry forward into the Alexa+ experience."
