DeepMind CEO Hassabis: I sleep six hours a day, usually feel energetic around 1 a.m.

Fortune recently featured an interview with Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, revealing his unconventional approach to rest and productivity. Hassabis disclosed that he sleeps very little, structuring his waking hours into two distinct work blocks.
Regarding his sleep routine, Hassabis noted, "I aim for six hours, but my habits are atypical. I can function effectively throughout the day." He emphasized that getting less than six hours of sleep negatively impacts brain health.
Co-founding DeepMind in 2010, which Google later acquired, Hassabis was honored with the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his groundbreaking work on protein structure prediction. He meticulously schedules his daytime hours with back-to-back meetings, leaving virtually no downtime.
After returning home to share dinner with his family, he begins a second work session at 10 PM, working until 4 AM. This late-night window is dedicated to deep thinking and creative research. Although creativity at 4 AM seems unlikely, he finds himself most alert around 1 AM. He has adhered to this rigorous schedule for approximately a decade.
Such an intense routine mirrors that of other tech leaders. For instance, Elon Musk has claimed that six hours of sleep is optimal for efficiency, while Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff averages about eight hours of rest.
