Want a top engineering job in 2025? Here are the skills you need, according to LinkedIn

Exploring LinkedIn's Evolution and Impact on Job Markets

LinkedIn, a pioneer in the digital professional networking space since the early 2000s, has grown into a multifaceted platform. It's not just a repository for online resumes; it's a vibrant social network, a learning resource, and a comprehensive job search tool. The company boasts being "the world's largest professional network with more than 1 billion members in over 200 countries and territories," and it has been a Microsoft subsidiary since 2016. This vast network and extensive job listings give LinkedIn a unique advantage in analyzing employment trends and skills demands.

When it comes to job listings, LinkedIn significantly outpaces competitors like Dice and Indeed. For instance, while Dice and Indeed listed 34,000 and 56,000 programming jobs respectively, LinkedIn showcased a staggering 2.3 million. This data underscores LinkedIn's dominance in the job market, particularly for tech roles.

LinkedIn's Insights on Job and Skill Trends

LinkedIn's January Jobs on the Rise report highlighted the 25 fastest-growing jobs in the US, with AI engineer and AI consultant topping the list, reflecting the current AI boom. However, the report also included diverse roles like physical therapists and security guards, showing LinkedIn's broad data scope.

Now, LinkedIn is shifting focus from job titles to skills with its Skills on the Rise report. This analysis is based on three key metrics: skill acquisition, hiring success, and emerging demand. Skill acquisition measures how frequently members add skills to their profiles. Hiring success looks at the skills of those hired in the past year, and emerging demand tracks how often new job listings mention specific skills.

Understanding LinkedIn's Methodology

LinkedIn's methodology focuses on growth rates, calculated as year-over-year percentage increases. However, they do not weight these growth rates, which can lead to skewed perceptions. For instance, a skill like Fortran programming might show a 100% growth rate from 20 to 40 listings, while Python might show a 50% increase from 500,000 to 750,000. Without weighting, Fortran would appear more popular, despite Python's much larger demand.

Engineering Skills on the Rise in 2025

Here's a look at LinkedIn's 2025 Engineering Skills on the Rise in the US, listed in order of growth rate:

  • Large Language Model (LLM) Development and Application: While LLM skills are growing rapidly, the actual number of jobs is still limited due to the niche nature of this field.
  • People Management: Surprising to see on an engineering list, but it highlights the increasing importance of management skills even for technical roles.
  • Agile Problem Solving: This skill emphasizes flexibility and rapid iteration, crucial for modern engineering challenges.
  • AI Strategy: With AI becoming integral to business strategies, understanding how to apply AI effectively is vital.
  • Azure SQL: Specific to Microsoft's cloud environment, this skill reflects the ongoing demand for cloud computing expertise.
  • Communications: A broad but essential skill, underscoring the need for engineers to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Cloud Applications: Familiarity with cloud-based SaaS applications is becoming increasingly important.
  • Technical Documentation: The ability to document work clearly is more critical as employers seek multidisciplinary talent.
  • Scikit-Learn and Matplotlib: These Python libraries are essential for AI development, reflecting the demand for AI-related coding skills.

Career Implications of LinkedIn's Skills Report

The Skills on the Rise report highlights three key areas for career development:

  1. AI and Cloud Expertise: Whether you're aiming for a role at a tech giant like OpenAI or just want to stay relevant, building skills in AI and cloud computing, particularly Python, is crucial.
  2. Soft Skills: People management and communication are non-negotiable. As part of a team, your ability to work with others and lead is just as important as your technical prowess.
  3. Adaptability and Documentation: The fast-paced world demands adaptability, and clear documentation ensures that knowledge is shared efficiently and decisions are well-documented.

From personal experience, documenting projects has been invaluable. It allows me to revisit past decisions and understand my thought processes, which has saved me countless times.
