Synchrony Partners With OpenAI To Offer Retailer-Specific Credit Cards For Direct Checkout In ChatGPT

Synchrony, a leading consumer finance provider, has entered a strategic partnership with OpenAI, enabling users to leverage retailer-specific credit cards directly within ChatGPT for seamless product purchases. As the issuer of exclusive cards for major brands like Amazon, Walmart, and Lowe’s, Synchrony aims to embed lending, rewards, and loyalty programs into AI-driven shopping and checkout experiences.
Industry analysts highlight this as a pivotal step for U.S. consumer credit institutions, integrating loans, payments, and reward systems directly into AI chatbots. For OpenAI, this collaboration marks a transition of ChatGPT from a conversational interface to a comprehensive online commerce platform.
While "agentic commerce" is emerging as the next frontier in online shopping, consumers typically leave AI agents to visit brand websites for final purchases. To bridge this gap, OpenAI has previously collaborated with payment giants like Visa and Stripe to facilitate transactions directly within chat interfaces.
Maran Nalluswami, Synchrony’s Chief Strategy Officer, stated, "Transactions on platforms like OpenAI are currently incomplete. Our goal is to ensure that when transactions occur within this ecosystem, our credit cards are integrated at the right point to guarantee successful completion."
Despite this vision, "agentic commerce" remains distant from widespread adoption. Nalluswami noted that integrating general credit cards with ChatGPT could take six to twelve months or longer. For exclusive retailer-specific cards, the timeline may be extended due to the need for coordination with various brand partners.
Consumers remain hesitant to share credit card details with AI or authorize agents to make purchases on their behalf. Uncertainties also surround the fee distribution model for transactions completed within ChatGPT. Nalluswami explained that retailers, Synchrony, and OpenAI are currently negotiating business models. He also disclosed ongoing discussions with other AI platforms, including Claude and Gemini, to embed Synchrony’s credit cards into their respective chatbots.
Beyond payment integrations, Synchrony will introduce a ChatGPT plugin allowing users to browse discounted products, promotional financing options, and partner offers. Simultaneously, Synchrony will deploy OpenAI’s latest models internally to accelerate its own product development.
