Spotify Resumes Service Following Outage

It looks like Spotify users across the US and Europe woke up to a frustrating surprise today. Reports flooded in about the music streaming giant being down, with many unable to load or stream their favorite tunes. At around 8:45 AM ET, Spotify's Status account on X acknowledged the hiccup, stating they were "aware of some issues" and were "checking them out."

As of 10:39 AM ET, Spotify was still in the process of trying to fix the problem, promising to get things back to normal "as soon as possible." They also quashed any rumors, stating clearly that "reports of this being a security hack are false."

While Spotify hasn't reached out to us directly about the situation, just before noon ET, it seems like the tide is turning. Most users are now saying that the service is back up and running, with the number of complaints dropping significantly. If you're looking for more updates, you can keep an eye on the Spotify help page dedicated to the April 16th outage.

Outage Spread and Impact

Initially, the bulk of the complaints came from Europe, but the problem quickly spread to the US. According to Downdetector, there was a noticeable spike in outages reported from the US, and our colleagues at *The Verge* in both the UK and US couldn't access Spotify either. The outage map from ThousandEyes indicates that this issue has affected users worldwide.

The disruption hit Spotify's web player, desktop app, and iOS app. Some desktop users were staring at a frustrating black screen that wouldn't load, while others could pick songs but couldn't play them. On iOS, some songs might have been playable, but only if they were cached before the outage hit.

Update, April 16th: We've added information about users reporting that the service is now functioning again.

Spotify's outage was a real bummer this morning! Woke up to no music, and it totally ruined my vibe. Glad they got it fixed quickly though, back to jamming now! 🎵 Maybe they should invest in better servers next time, eh? 😂
