Spotify has officially partnered with Universal Music Group (UMG) to introduce a new feature allowing Premium subscribers to generate AI covers and remixes of popular tracks. Launching as a premium add-on, the tool ensures artists receive a revenue share for their contributions, marking a significant shift toward licensed AI music creation.
While specific pricing and launch dates remain undisclosed, Spotify confirmed a licensing agreement with UMG. This follows last year’s announcement that the platform was collaborating with major labels—including Sony Music, Warner Music, Merlin, and Believe—to develop AI products that prioritize artist rights and consent.
Spotify emphasized that these AI tools are built on “upfront agreements” rather than post-hoc negotiations, a clear reference to competitors like Suno who have faced legal challenges for using unlicensed data.
Key principles include giving artists and rights holders full control over their participation in AI tools, ensuring they are fairly compensated if they choose to engage.
“Solving hard problems for music is what Spotify does, and fan-made covers and remixes are next. What we’re building is grounded in consent, credit, and compensation for the artists and songwriters that take part,” said Spotify co-CEO Alex Norström. He highlighted the collaborative effort with UMG Chairman & CEO Sir Lucian Grainge to enhance the music ecosystem for both fans and creators.
UMG’s Sir Lucian Grainge praised the initiative as a way for artists to deepen fan engagement and unlock new revenue streams. Details on which specific UMG artists have opted in are not yet available.
Competitors like Suno and Udio pioneered AI music generation but faced significant legal pushback from major labels. Suno recently settled a $500 million lawsuit with Warner Music Group, while UMG settled its case with Udio, highlighting the legal risks of unlicensed AI training.
Suno continues to face copyright claims from UMG and Sony Music, while Udio has resolved disputes with Warner and UMG but is still negotiating with Sony.
Recognizing consumer demand, Spotify bypassed legal controversies by securing direct deals with labels. UMG’s partnership may signal a broader trend of label collaborations, though Spotify has not explicitly confirmed future agreements.
The announcement coincided with Spotify’s Investor Day, which also unveiled AI-powered audiobook creation tools, podcasting features, a desktop app for AI-generated podcasts, and exclusive concert ticket perks for top fans.
