Motional to relaunch robotaxi service with AI focus, plans driverless rollout by 2026

Nearly two years ago, Motional found itself at a critical juncture in the autonomous vehicle industry.

The company, formed through a $4 billion joint venture between Hyundai Motor Group and Aptiv, had already delayed the launch of its driverless robotaxi service with Lyft. After Aptiv withdrew financial support, Hyundai injected an additional $1 billion to sustain operations. A series of workforce reductions, including a 40% cut in May 2024, reduced staff from a peak of 1,400 to under 600. At the same time, rapid AI advancements were transforming engineering approaches.

Confronted with the need to adapt or cease operations, Motional suspended its activities and chose to evolve.

Motional confirmed to TechCrunch that it has relaunched its robotaxi strategy with an AI-first methodology for its self-driving technology, targeting a commercial driverless service in Las Vegas by late 2026. The company has initiated an employee-only robotaxi service with safety drivers and intends to expand it publicly this year through an undisclosed ride-hailing partner. By year's end, Motional plans to remove safety drivers and commence fully driverless commercial operations.

"We recognized the transformative potential of recent AI breakthroughs," explained Motional CEO Laura Major during a presentation in Las Vegas. "While our existing system was safe, we identified a gap in achieving an affordable, scalable global solution. This led us to temporarily halt commercial operations—slowing short-term progress to accelerate long-term success."

This strategic shift involved transitioning from traditional robotics to AI foundation models. While Motional's platform already incorporated machine learning for perception and reasoning, it relied heavily on rules-based programming. According to Major, this created a complex software ecosystem that limited scalability.

Meanwhile, transformer architectures originally developed for language processing began revolutionizing physical AI systems, including autonomous driving. This technological evolution enabled sophisticated AI models like ChatGPT, reshaping industry standards.

Motional developed methods to consolidate specialized models into unified architecture while maintaining individual components for developer flexibility. Major emphasized this hybrid approach delivers dual benefits.

"This architecture enables two crucial capabilities: seamless adaptation to new cities and environments, and cost-efficient scalability," she noted. "For instance, varying traffic signals between cities no longer require system redevelopment—just data collection and model training for safe operation."

TechCrunch experienced Motional's updated system during a 30-minute Las Vegas demonstration. While single rides can't fully evaluate autonomous technology, they reveal operational nuances and developmental progress.

The Hyundai Ioniq 5 demonstration vehicle navigated from Las Vegas Boulevard into the Aria Hotel's busy pickup zone, maneuvering around stationary taxis, pedestrians, and decorative obstacles. The system demonstrated measured progress through complex urban challenges.

Previous Lyft partnerships involved partial autonomy excluding parking and hotel zones where drivers assumed control. The new system handles these challenging environments autonomously.

Development continues on in-vehicle displays and response optimization, evidenced by cautious navigation around double-parked delivery vehicles during the demo. Despite these refinements, no safety driver intervention occurred.

Major asserts Motional's path ensures both safety and economic viability, with Hyundai committed to long-term development.

"Our ultimate vision involves implementing Level 4 autonomy in consumer vehicles," Major stated, referencing fully autonomous systems requiring no human input. "Robotaxis represent the initial application, but every automaker ultimately aims to integrate this technology into production vehicles."
