Amazon's Alexa+: A Bold Move in Consumer AI

Amazon unveiled an exciting vision of an "agentic" future on Wednesday, showcasing their upgraded Alexa, now called Alexa+, which aims to handle a variety of everyday tasks, from booking restaurant reservations to finding appliance repair services.
If Amazon can pull this off, they could be the first to market with a comprehensive, consumer-focused agent tool. The company is set to enhance Alexa with more natural and expressive interactions, powered by generative AI models. This version of Alexa will seamlessly connect with both first- and third-party apps, services, and platforms, operating in a fully autonomous and intelligent manner.
“We believe that the future is full of agents — we have believed this for some time,” said Daniel Rausch, VP of Amazon Alexa and Echo, during a keynote on Wednesday. “There will be many AI agents out there doing things for customers, many of them will have specialized skills … And we’ve also always believed that in a world full of AI, these agents should interact with each other. They should interoperate seamlessly for customers.”
This could be a game-changer for Amazon, a tech giant that's been struggling to keep its aging assistant relevant. Despite years of investment in Alexa, the company hasn't seen significant revenue from it, and their hardware division has reportedly burned through billions.
Agents, a somewhat vague term now used to describe AI models that can act on behalf of users, are seen as the next big thing in AI. The tech industry believes agents will be key to unlocking the potential of increasingly advanced models. They're expected to handle routine tasks and boost productivity for both individuals and businesses.
That's the hope, anyway. So far, agents have been a bit of a letdown.
Major AI labs like Anthropic and OpenAI have introduced agents capable of controlling browsers to perform tasks. However, these agents often make errors and need a lot of help to handle more complex tasks. Other ambitious projects, like Google's Project Mariner, are still in the prototype phase without any confirmed release dates.
Amazon's demos of Alexa+, set to launch in a preview next month, showed a smoother, more refined agent experience with fewer technical glitches. The assistant was shown pulling information from various sources like emails, calendars, and stored preferences to assist with daily errands.
In one demo at a New York press event on Wednesday morning, Amazon showed Alexa+ creating a grocery shopping list and ordering items through integrations with Amazon Fresh, Whole Foods, and other local stores. Another demo illustrated how Alexa+ can automatically buy products on Amazon when they're on sale and book spa and fitness appointments via the wellness app Vagaro.
According to Amazon, Alexa+'s capabilities go even further. It can place food delivery orders through Grubhub, call an Uber, find concert tickets on Ticketmaster, create travel itineraries using sources like Tripadvisor, and even extract important dates and times from event flyers to set reminders.
Sounds almost too good to be true, right?
It's an ambitious and thrilling vision, and Amazon seems well-positioned to make it happen, thanks to their extensive data on shopping habits and partnerships with major tech ecosystems and services. Alexa+ users who are willing to share their data could enjoy a more personalized, tailored experience. It's no coincidence that Alexa+, which normally costs $19.99 a month, will be free for Prime subscribers, Amazon's most loyal customers.
Amazon is also relying on its huge Alexa installed base — over 600 million devices — to kickstart Alexa+ adoption. With an Alexa-compatible speaker already in many homes, the company's betting that Alexa+ will be an easy sell for many users.
Perhaps the biggest hurdle for Amazon will be overcoming the technical limitations of current AI technology. Alexa+ has reportedly faced multiple delays due to issues with the models; earlier versions struggled to answer questions correctly and even had trouble turning smart lights on and off.
It's worth noting that competitors' early attempts at agentic tools have also hit roadblocks. OpenAI's ChatGPT deep research, an agentic model for compiling research reports, sometimes produces false information. Google's Gemini chatbot has been known to provide factually incorrect email summaries.
It was hard to gauge Alexa+'s performance at Wednesday's press event. The demos were tightly controlled, and attendees weren't allowed to test the new assistant extensively.
We'll need to wait and see how Alexa+ performs in real-world scenarios to determine if it lives up to Amazon's agentic vision. If it does, it could be a remarkable achievement and might just give Amazon the edge in the race for consumer-focused AI agents.

Alexa+ sounds like a game-changer! Booking restaurants and fixing appliances? Count me in, but I hope it doesn’t start suggesting I repair my toaster myself. 😅
