Roblox Unveils AI Game Creation Tool in Mobile App

Roblox unveiled a new tool named “Build” on Thursday, enabling users to create games directly from mobile devices with the help of artificial intelligence.
This feature allows anyone to transform basic text prompts into a functional game prototype, requiring no coding knowledge. For instance, entering a prompt like “Create a cozy adventure game set in a dense forest” will generate an initial version that users can refine and share with friends.
According to a company blog post, “Powered by a wide array of AI models, including both open-source and proprietary Roblox systems, Build manages gameplay mechanics, environments, characters, visual aesthetics, audio, and more.”
Major tech firms such as Google, Microsoft, and Tencent have developed comparable tools. However, AI-driven game creation has sparked debate among developers and players, with critics warning that lowering barriers through text prompts could flood the platform with low-quality, repetitive content. This shift may intensify competition, as creators must now compete not only with human developers but also with AI-generated content that can be produced at a much faster pace.
These concerns are echoed in this year’s Game Developer Conference State of the Game Industry survey, which revealed that 52% of industry professionals believe generative AI is negatively impacting the sector.
To mitigate these issues, Roblox intends to rank AI-generated games based on player retention, mirroring the ranking system for traditional games. Games that fail to attract players will receive less visibility.
“Our discovery algorithms prioritize games with strong long-term retention, effectively filtering out low-quality AI content. The quality standards for the homepage remain unchanged: if a game isn’t played, it won’t be discovered. Our objective with these new tools is to accelerate creation across all skill levels,” the company stated.
The Build feature will begin public alpha testing on July 28, accessible to users in New Zealand aged nine and older who have verified their age. Users aged 16 and above will be able to publish their creations to a global audience. A free basic version will be available, alongside premium options.
In addition to Build, Roblox is developing AI agents to assist creators with playtesting and analytics. These tools are expected to launch in the coming months.
This new feature underscores Roblox’s continued commitment to AI, including an AI foundation model for generating 3D game assets and a chatbot designed to support developers throughout the creation process. Furthermore, Roblox is working on a “new scene-generation model” capable of producing entire editable and playable 3D scenes from a single text prompt.
The announcement follows Roblox’s recent decision to discontinue “Roblox Connect,” an avatar-based video calling feature introduced in 2023.
