Why KFC and Taco Bell may be most Americans' first taste of AI agents

Last fall, Yum! Brands kicked off a game-changer by introducing AI ordering at hundreds of Taco Bell locations. The success of that rollout has spurred them to bring this tech to even more restaurants and integrate AI in innovative ways. This week, Yum! Brands, the world's largest restaurant company with over 61,000 locations including KFC, Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, and Habit Burger & Grill, announced a thrilling partnership with Nvidia. They're teaming up to develop cutting-edge AI technologies for their global restaurants.

So, what's coming down the pipeline?

Voice Automated Order-Taking AI Agents: Imagine pulling up to a drive-thru or calling in an order and being greeted by a conversational AI that not only understands your speech but also gets the complexities of the menu and your preferences. These AI agents can suggest add-ons and make the ordering process feel more natural. It's like chatting with a friendly, efficient staff member who never forgets your favorite toppings.

Computer Vision-Enhanced Operations: Restaurants are gearing up to use computer vision to streamline drive-thru efficiency and manage back-of-house labor better. With real-time analytics and alerts, AI can predict busy times and adjust staffing accordingly. It's like having a super-smart manager who knows exactly when to call in extra hands.

Accelerated Restaurant Intelligence: AI will dive deep into restaurant performance data, crafting personalized action plans for managers. If a restaurant's struggling with slowdowns or order inaccuracies, AI steps in with suggestions. And if a location's hitting it out of the park, AI can pinpoint what's working and recommend those strategies to other stores. It's like having a personal coach for your business.

Upgrading hundreds of restaurants

Yum! Brands is setting its sights on 500 restaurants across its brands to get this futuristic tech. Wendy's has already jumped on the bandwagon, introducing AI order-taking at hundreds of its locations, including bilingual AI in Florida and Ohio. Meanwhile, McDonald's decided to stick with human order-takers after pulling the plug on AI last summer.

But the AI revolution doesn't stop there. Yum! Brands is planning an even bigger rollout, including AI agents equipped with sentiment analysis for personalized customer interactions. I've experienced AI ordering at various spots, like Bojangles in North Carolina. It felt strange at first, but now I actively seek out locations with AI because the process is quicker and more precise.
