Ford Upgrades BlueCruise with AI Assistant and Enhanced Hands-Free Tech

Ford announced at the 2026 Consumer Electronics Show that it is developing an AI assistant, set to debut first in its smartphone app before integrating into its vehicles in 2027. The company also previewed the next generation of its BlueCruise advanced driver assistance system, which is both more affordable to produce and more capable, paving the way for hands-off, eyes-off driving by 2028.
This announcement stood out as one of the few from a major automaker at CES, a significant shift from the late 2010s when car companies were a dominant presence at the show. Ford made the news public not at a major keynote, but during a "Great Minds" speaker session designed to explore the convergence of technology and human experience.
Ford states that its digital assistant, powered by Google Cloud and built on existing large language models, will have deep access to vehicle data. This enables it to answer broad questions, such as "How many bags of mulch can my truck bed hold?" as well as provide detailed, real-time information like engine oil life.
The assistant will launch in the newly updated Ford app in early 2026. A native, in-vehicle version will follow in 2027, though Ford has not yet specified which models will receive it first.
While Ford didn't elaborate on the exact in-car user experience, looking at other technology-focused automakers offers clues. Recently, Rivian demonstrated its assistant handling text messages, complex navigation, and climate control adjustments. Tesla has integrated its Grok chatbot, which owners use for spontaneous tour planning. Ford's initial capabilities may differ, but the company has a full year to refine the vehicle integration before its 2027 launch.
The new BlueCruise system revealed on Wednesday is reportedly 30% less expensive to manufacture than the current version. It is scheduled to debut in 2027 on the first electric vehicle built on Ford's cost-effective "Universal Electric Vehicle" platform, expected to be a mid-sized pickup truck.
