Latitude, maker of AI Dungeon, launches Voyage platform for AI-driven RPG creation

Anyone who has played a role-playing game (RPG) knows the thrill of crafting a character exactly as they envision and embarking on epic quests. Now, picture an AI-powered, text-based RPG where every encounter with a non-player character (NPC) is completely unscripted.

Latitude, the startup famous for its open-ended text adventure games with AI-generated “infinite storylines,” has just launched a new platform that puts users in the shoes of game designers.

Called Voyage, this AI-driven RPG platform lets players design their own game worlds with AI assistance. They can describe settings in detail—regions, cities, landmarks, main quests, and villains—and define game mechanics such as abilities, leveling systems, and combat challenges.

For instance, if you want to build a fishing village terrorized by a sea monster, the AI generates the code needed to bring your concept to life. You can further customize the world before sharing it with others to explore.

For players, Voyage offers a variety of experiences across genres, from cozy adventures to more hardcore quests. Because it’s text-based, players read the story (with optional audio narration) and type how they want their character to respond.

Unlike traditional RPGs, when a character faces a goblin attack, instead of the usual choices—run, fight, or hide—players can opt for unconventional scenarios, like becoming a goblin therapist and helping the creatures work through their problems rather than using violence.

When players input their chosen actions, the AI narrates the results, including NPC reactions. With no fixed script, interactions can take unexpected turns, often leading to surprising and occasionally bizarre conversations. For example, during our testing, a troll who had tied up our character began venting about his marriage problems.

Character progression relies on skills and a bit of luck, similar to rolling dice in tabletop games. As characters defeat bosses or complete quests, they can unlock special abilities like “Counterspell,” which prevents an enemy from using magic. (Many abilities in Voyage draw inspiration from classic Dungeons & Dragons spells, adding a fun layer.)

And if players get stuck, a chatbot is available to suggest actions or even jump to different parts of the story.

At the heart of Voyage is Latitude’s World Engine, a system that took five years to develop. It combines multiple AI systems that narrate actions, manage gameplay, track characters and objects, and retain backstories and relationships, ensuring continuity. Instead of generic NPCs with repetitive dialogue, players meet characters who recall past interactions. For example, if you betray a character’s trust, they might avoid you or become a rival later.

“Characters aren’t just reactive to you—they have their own personalities and backstories, and they respond in ways that feel genuine. That’s the magic of the engine,” Latitude CEO and co-founder Nick Walton told TechCrunch.

Latitude first made waves in AI-native gaming when it launched AI Dungeon in 2019, attracting millions of players.

“It went viral as one of the first mainstream interactions with generative AI,” Walton said. “It showed the initial promise of games and worlds that aren’t fully predefined or scripted… Voyage takes that core idea and expands it tenfold—from a single AI model to a complete world with deterministic systems, challenges, progression, and persistence—solving the limitations that AI Dungeon alone couldn’t fully overcome.”

Voyage is currently in expanded beta, with an open beta planned for later this year. Early testers have already interacted with over 160,000 unique AI-generated characters, each with their own personality. The average player has made nearly 3,000 gameplay decisions.

Alongside the launch, Latitude also announced a partnership with Google’s AI Futures Fund. The platform combines its proprietary models with third-party ones, including Google’s Gemini Flash for image generation and Gemma for text, audio, and video.

Additionally, former Roblox Chief Business Officer Craig Donato has joined as an investor and board member. Other prominent investors include Album VC, Griffin Gaming Partners, Midjourney, and NFX.

Voyage is free to play but will soon introduce subscription plans at $15, $30, and $50 per month. These plans offer advanced AI features and remove limits on the number of actions players can take.

It’s also worth noting that while the platform is suitable for all ages, some experiences contain mature content—comparable to what you’d find on Steam, according to Walton. He adds that Voyage includes safety measures and parental controls to help users filter out inappropriate material.

Finally, an AI that actually handles RPG logic without breaking immersion! As a DM, I'm tired of players min-maxing stats, so letting the AI handle NPC reactions is a game-changer. 🎲 Can't wait to test if it respects the lore or just throws random loot at me. #AIGaming

I'm both excited and terrified. AI Dungeon already had some wild moments, now they're making a whole platform? Hope they've fixed the filter issues, otherwise we're in for some... interesting NPC interactions. 😅

Wait, so we're basically letting AI write our D&D campaigns now? That's either the best idea ever or a recipe for chaos. 😂 I'm curious how it handles plot holes—probably better than my DM.
