Self Inspection Secures $3M for AI Vehicle Inspections

A wave of startups is pushing to revolutionize vehicle inspections, making them quicker, simpler, and more cost-effective. Among them, San Diego-based Self Inspection stands out with its AI-driven solution, and it has now secured significant backing from investors.
Founded in 2021, Self Inspection is gearing up to announce a $3 million seed funding round on Thursday, co-led by Costanoa Ventures and DVx Ventures, with the latter being led by Jon McNeill, former Tesla president. Westlake Financial, a company managing over a million vehicle transactions each year, also joined the investment round.
Karim Bousta, a partner at DVx Ventures, sees the traditional vehicle inspection process as a prime target for innovation. He praised Self Inspection's technology for enhancing operations for auto lenders, dealerships, and rental companies while setting a new standard in the $30 billion vehicle inspection market for quality, reliability, and a seamless digital experience.
This seed round is a testament to the technology Self Inspection has developed over the past few years, according to CEO Constantine Yaremtso, speaking to TechCrunch. The company already serves clients like Avis, CarOffer (a digital wholesaler under CarGurus), and Westlake Financial.
With the new funding, Yaremtso shared that the company is poised for expansion and scaling. Unlike UVEye, which recently raised $191 million for its AI-powered drive-through inspection tech, Self Inspection opts for a smartphone camera approach, though it can also use data from a car’s OBD2 port.
Self Inspection trained its AI on what it claims to be "one of the largest datasets of damaged vehicles." This enables the AI to swiftly identify damage, evaluate its severity, and produce a detailed cost estimate along with a comprehensive vehicle inspection report.
Yaremtso explained that their service provides a PDF report akin to what you'd receive from a body shop, detailing the necessary labor, repair costs, and required parts.
What sets Self Inspection apart, according to Yaremtso, is its simplicity and adaptability, distinguishing it from competitors like Ravin. The software isn't a one-size-fits-all solution; instead, it offers a user-friendly back-end configurator. This allows clients like fleets or vehicle marketplaces to customize inspections, such as focusing on high-wear areas or adding checks for EV charging cables in the trunk.
Moreover, Self Inspection aims for ease of use. The software doesn't mandate specific distances for photo or video capture, and it's not a standalone app. Instead, it integrates seamlessly into customers' existing workflows, accessible via a smartphone's web browser through a texted or emailed link.
Yaremtso highlighted the accessibility of the tool, saying, "Everyone has a good camera, everyone has a good phone, everyone knows how to capture photos. As soon as they receive a text message or email, it's easy to go." The goal is to empower marketplaces and banks to conduct inspections effortlessly, speeding up the sales cycle.

This AI vehicle inspection tech sounds like a game-changer! 🚗 Curious how accurate it is compared to human inspectors—any chance it misses sneaky rust spots?
This AI vehicle inspection thing sounds wild! 🚗 Self Inspection’s tech could save so much time at the mechanic. But, like, will it catch every little issue or just the big stuff? Curious to see how it stacks up against a human eye.
This AI vehicle inspection tech sounds like a game-changer! 🚗 Faster and cheaper checks could save us all time at the DMV. But, I wonder how reliable it is compared to a human mechanic?
A inspeção automática da Self Inspection é incrível, mas às vezes deixa passar detalhes menores. Mesmo assim, é muito útil e economiza tempo. Vale a pena investir. Estou ansioso para ver as melhorias futuras! 💪
