AI Star Fund Hits 439% Return, Begins Large-Scale Sell-Off; Anthropic Stake Remains Intact
Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund established by ex-OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner, has incurred substantial losses amid ongoing shifts in the AI infrastructure landscape. The fund offloaded most of its publicly traded equity positions to Citadel, under Ken Griffin’s leadership. Post-transaction, assets under management have contracted to approximately $10 billion, down from a peak of $20 billion, signaling a recalibration in the AI infrastructure investment cycle.

Aschenbrenner launched the fund in 2024 at age 25, following his tenure on OpenAI’s “Super Alignment” team. He initially captured market attention by predicting sustained demand for semiconductors, compute power, storage, and energy infrastructure driven by AI advancement. The fund’s early performance was robust, delivering annual returns of up to 439% by June, with assets swelling to $45 billion. However, as the broader AI infrastructure sector corrected, key holdings including SK Hynix, SanDisk, Bloom Energy, and Nebius Group plummeted by over 30% in the last month. These declines were amplified by the fund’s leveraged strategy, deepening its losses.
Amid market volatility, Aschenbrenner wrote to investors on July 24, describing the current climate as “one of the best buying opportunities since early last year” and inviting capital additions starting August 1. The appeal failed to garner expected support. Citadel’s acquisition aligns with its standard approach of absorbing quality assets when leveraged players are forced to liquidate. Notably, Citadel already held positions in select AI infrastructure stocks, underscoring its long-term bullish stance on the sector.
Crucially, Situational Awareness retained its private equity stakes, maintaining a $5 billion position in Anthropic. It also holds investments in AI firms MatX and Fluidstack. Anthropic, valued at $96.5 billion following its Series H round in May, is anticipated to launch an IPO as early as October. These private holdings may serve as a critical buffer for the fund’s future recovery. The episode highlights intensified short-term volatility in AI infrastructure investing, yet long-term institutional confidence in the sector’s fundamental value remains intact.
