Consumer finance firm Synchrony has formed an enterprise partnership with OpenAI, enabling users of its retailer-specific credit cards issued for brands such as Amazon Walmart and Lowe’s to make purchases directly within ChatGPT. The collaboration aims to integrate lending rewards and loyalty programs into AI-based shopping experiences, helping transform ChatGPT from a conversational tool into a full online commerce platform. Synchrony’s CEO said the current ecosystem lacks smooth transaction completion mechanisms so their cards can be loaded where needed to finish purchases. While the company expects it could take 6 to 12 months or longer for such connectivity to be available, consumers remain cautious about sharing credit card details with AI and questions exist over fee distribution. Synchrony also plans to release a ChatGPT plugin offering discounted products financing options and partner deals, and will use OpenAI’s latest model to speed up product development while discussing embedding its cards in other AI platforms. Analysts view the move as a significant step for U.S. consumer credit institutions introducing lending payment and reward functions into AI chatbots.
