NORD expands IE5+ synchronous motor series with new 112 frame size

NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has broadened its IE5+ synchronous motor series with the introduction of a 112 frame size. This new SK 112 motor expands the capability of compact IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motors up to 15.0 horsepower.

NORD DRIVESYSTEMS' IE5+ permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) provide exceptional energy efficiency. Utilizing permanent magnet technology with high-strength magnets to generate a constant magnetic field eliminates the need for external excitation. This results in efficiency levels up to 95%, high power density, and substantial energy savings.

NORD offers IE5+ motors in sizes 71, 90, and the newly introduced size 112, extending the power range from 0.5 to 15.0 hp with torque up to 387 lb-in.

Exploring the IE5+ motor series

IE5+ synchronous motors maintain consistent torque and efficiency across a wide speed spectrum, even under partial load and at low speeds. This capability helps reduce system variations, cut administrative overhead, and streamline manufacturing, logistics, storage, and service operations.

Ventilated (TEFC) versions are available in all three frame sizes, featuring a finned housing for superior heat dissipation, making them ideal for continuous-duty intralogistics applications. Smooth-bodied, non-ventilated (TENV) versions are offered in sizes 71 and 90, providing a corrosion-resistant option suitable for hygienic environments like food and beverage processing. The TENV versions also offer an IP69K protection rating for an easy-clean surface that withstands demanding conditions.

IE5+ motors far surpass the highest defined energy efficiency class, significantly lowering energy use and CO2 emissions.

Beyond energy efficiency, these motors are designed with material efficiency in mind. Their innovative 8-pole Interior Permanent Magnet (IPM) design reduces the number of active motor components, saving materials on laminations and magnets. The stator can also be manufactured using single-tooth winding, which decreases copper usage in the winding head.

NORD configures drive solutions to meet specific application needs, creating the optimal system for each project. IE5+ synchronous motors enhance system flexibility with compatibility across NORD's range of gear units and electronic control systems.

These motors come standard with an incremental encoder and offer additional options such as an integrated mechanical brake, motor connectors, absolute or magnetic encoders, and various flange mountings for gear unit or direct attachment. Regardless of the application, IE5+ PMSM motors help users achieve greater operational efficiency, lower total cost of ownership, and a faster return on investment.

NORD also develops and manufactures a comprehensive range of drives for over 100 industries, with gear units covering torques from 10 Nm to over 282 kNm. It supplies electric motors from 0.12 kW to 1,000 kW, along with the necessary power electronics including frequency inverters up to 160 kW.

In February, NORD announced the availability of digital twins for system development. Based on a myNORD configuration, users can request custom simulation models of their configured drive systems.
