Mistral Focuses on Business Operations

Hundreds of heads of state, tech CEOs, and nonprofit leaders have gathered in Paris for the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit. This week, the French AI startup Mistral seems to be stealing the show. In business terms, we'd say Mistral is riding some pretty strong tailwinds.

Mistral has been a standout in the European AI scene. It initially made waves with its impressive open-weight models, and thanks to the buzz around large language models (LLMs), generative AI, and its open-source approach, it quickly raised over $1 billion. But over the past few months, its star has dimmed a bit, especially with what's been happening with LLM startups in the U.S.

OpenAI has raised a whopping $18 billion and might soon add another $40 billion to that, while Anthropic has secured around $8 billion. Meanwhile, Chinese competitors like DeepSeek have released open-weight models that outperform Mistral's. Mistral couldn't beat DeepSeek or outraise its American rivals, but the AI Action Summit has come at just the right time to shift the narrative around the French startup.

Now, Mistral is getting down to business.

"We've gone from a science company focused on creating the strongest models for laptops to one that's now providing solutions to enterprises, building custom applications, and boosting worker productivity," said Mistral's co-founder and CEO Arthur Mensch at the summit.

Last week, the company launched Le Chat on iOS and Android, an AI assistant aimed at both consumers and businesses. And this week, it's getting a major boost from top French policymakers.

"Go and download Le Chat, which is made by Mistral, instead of ChatGPT by OpenAI or something else," French President Emmanuel Macron urged in a TV interview on Sunday evening. "We want them to invest in France and develop partnerships. When you download it, you're supporting a European champion, a French champion. You're creating jobs here, but you're also making them stronger. And that's what sovereignty is all about."

Le Chat is currently the most downloaded iOS app in France, but it's not catching on as well in other European markets. It's ranked #66 in Germany and doesn't even make the top 100 in Spain, Italy, and the U.K.

Renewed focus on the enterprise market

But Mistral isn't putting all its eggs in the consumer basket. The company is focusing on making money from enterprise customers, and the Paris event has become a platform for Mistral to showcase its progress in this area.

"We've partnered with France Travail [the national employment agency]. They now use our technologies to help jobseekers find and access job listings more easily," Mensch said in a TV interview with TF1 on Sunday. "We've also partnered with Veolia to improve the efficiency of their wastewater plants, so they can monitor what's happening in real-time."

At the AI Action Summit, John Elkann, chairman of Stellantis, announced a broad partnership with Mistral. "We're already doing a lot of things together within our organization," Elkann said.

By the end of the year, the car manufacturer behind Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, and Jeep will update its mobile app to replace the owner's manual with a Mistral-powered AI assistant. This is just the beginning of what could be a significant relationship.

"As we move forward, we think drivers will be asking for information and controlling the vehicle through artificial intelligence, through web connections, but also through embedded devices that run on the edge, which are more efficient, have low latency, and can be controlled by voice," Mensch explained.

Mistral is also partnering with Helsing, a European defense company working on strike drones and electronic components for fighter jets. In this case, Mistral is developing new "Vision-Language-Action models" likely to run on edge devices.

For now, Mistral has a few tricks up its sleeve for enterprise customers.

Mistral allows you to deploy Le Chat in your environment with custom models and a custom user interface. If you're in defense or banking, you might need to deploy an AI assistant on-premises, which isn't currently possible with ChatGPT Enterprise or Claude Enterprise.

Mistral also offers its frontier models through an API that developers can use in their own applications.

With the Helsing partnership, Mistral is proving the importance of having a European AI champion. Now, the question is whether Mistral can convince other European countries to rely on a European provider.

"Mistral is Europe's chance, and we only get one chance. Everyone has to work with Mistral," said Nicolas Dufourcq, CEO of Bpifrance, which is also an early shareholder in the French AI startup. Dufourcq added that he needs Mistral to generate €500 million in revenue in 2025 ($515 million at current exchange rates).

That would be a huge leap from 2024's revenue, which, according to multiple sources, was only in the tens of millions of euros.

There are other challenges ahead due to the fragmentation of the European market. Several attendees at the AI Action Summit expressed skepticism about other European countries' willingness to bet on a French player.

Meanwhile, the Paris-based company also wants to control its destiny when it comes to infrastructure. Its CEO announced plans to invest "billions" in an AI data center. "We're going to do our bit and invest several billion euros in a cluster in Essonne, so we can train even more efficient systems in just a few months' time," Mensch said.

Details are still sparse on this front. It's unclear whether Mistral will partner with a third party to finance the data center or raise a new funding round to build one itself.

In the latter case, Mistral might look to Cerebras, an American AI company specializing in fast inference that already works with Mistral to speed up the responses of its chatbot product, Le Chat.

The majority of Cerebras' revenue currently comes from Emirati AI holding company G42. As competition heats up between the U.S. and China, Mistral might seek a third path, independent from big American tech companies and Chinese capital. Could that mean looking for money in the Middle East?

Mistral is killing it at the AI Summit in Paris! Their focus on business operations is exactly what we need. It's like they know exactly what businesses are looking for. Only thing is, their interface could be a bit more user-friendly, but overall, they're on fire!

Mistral's focus on business operations is spot on! I've seen their presentations at the summit and they're really shaking things up. The only thing is, I wish they'd dive deeper into specific use cases. Still, it's exciting to see what they're doing!
