"Launching Our Google AI Essentials Course: A Step-by-Step Guide"

In April, Grow with Google kicked off Google AI Essentials, a course designed to help everyone get a grip on AI. This came right after generative AI burst onto the scene, sparking a wave of new products and lively discussions. People were sharing AI-generated images and experimenting with prompts, while others were pondering the bigger picture: How should we really be using these AI tools? Anoop Sinha, the Research Director for AI & Future Technologies on the Technology & Society team, saw the huge potential in the public's curiosity about AI. "It became pretty obvious that Google had a chance to help people understand this tech," he says. He started chatting with SVP of Research, Technology & Society James Manyika about how they could make it happen. "What kept popping up in our discussions was that education was our best bet," Anoop explains. "If we could educate folks about AI, we could help them get comfortable with it, understand it better, and see it as an opportunity." Anoop joined forces with Grow with Google, and together they launched Google AI Essentials. The course is spread across five modules, offering an intro to AI, tips for boosting productivity at work, strategies for crafting effective prompts, a dive into responsible AI, and ways to stay ahead as the tech keeps changing. It's loaded with hands-on exercises—like organizing an event or clearing out your inbox—as well as solid basics, like spotting AI biases. The course is available worldwide in English, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese, with more languages on the way. You can finish it in under 10 hours, and no prior experience is needed. "We designed AI Essentials with knowledge workers in mind—people who create, manage, and share information," Anoop says. "That's a big chunk of the economy, over 1 billion people worldwide. Many of these workers use our tools, from Search to Docs. As AI evolves, so will their roles and the workplace, and we want to empower as many people as possible to navigate these changes and thrive." To support this, we announced the course alongside a $75 million AI Opportunity Fund from Google.org, aimed at helping workforce development and educational organizations across the U.S. teach AI skills to over 1 million Americans. The journey from idea to launch for AI Essentials was a team effort. Experts from various Google organizations, including Google DeepMind, Education for Social Impact, Technology & Society, and Google Research, contributed to the course's content and design. When it came time to beta test, testers went through all five modules and gave feedback, pointing out parts that felt too theoretical. In response, the team added more practical elements, says Grow with Google Program Manager Yasmin Sanders Fathi, who led the development of AI Essentials. They created, for instance, a five-point "Checklist for Responsible AI Use," which includes steps like evaluating content before sharing it. "We thought this was a practical way to teach a pretty abstract concept," Yasmin says. Partners from nonprofit, educational, commercial, and government sectors also tested the course. "During the development stage, we formed a Content Advisory Group with top partners, and I talked with them about the challenges they face and how they want to incorporate AI in the workplace," Yasmin says. "Once the syllabus was ready, they reviewed it and encouraged their workers and faculty members to beta test." Beta testers shared valuable feedback and how AI Essentials helped them. Feedback wasn't the only thing that made the team adjust their approach. There were practical hurdles, too, and the challenge of keeping up with the fast-evolving technology. "Many new generative AI products, like video and code generation tools, came out after we started working on the course," Anoop says. "As exciting as they were, we stayed focused on our original goal—to provide curated content on the essentials. We chose evergreen topics that are foundational for learners, and included enough info and resources so that anyone taking the course can keep up with new tools as they come out." The team plans to update the materials as needed, and the final module, "Stay Ahead of the AI Curve," is designed to help graduates stay agile. In it, learners develop strategies for staying informed about the latest AI—one practical tip is to set up regular meetings with a colleague to discuss new developments and tools—and are encouraged to think creatively about future AI applications. For example, if a multimodal model like MedPaLM can be tailored to assist clinicians, how might a model be customized to help with your own job? "I'm a knowledge worker myself, and this technology has become my go-to over the past year. Whenever I'm stuck or need more ideas, I just ask Gemini," Yasmin says. "I can't wait for people to start using the same language I'm using every day in their workplaces."

The Google AI Essentials course is a solid intro to AI, but it's pretty basic. If you're new to AI, it's a good start, but if you're looking for deep dives, you might be disappointed. Still, it's free and easy to follow, so why not give it a shot?

The Google AI Essentials course is a solid intro to AI, perfect for beginners. It's easy to follow and covers the basics well. Only wish it had more hands-on projects to really dive in. Still, a great starting point for anyone curious about AI!
