AvatarOS Secures $7M Seed Funding from M13 for AI Virtual Influencer Platform
A few years back, the metaverse hype led to a surge in startups focusing on digital avatars. Although the excitement around the metaverse has cooled off, the rise of generative AI has breathed new life into the avatar scene, making it simpler to create diverse virtual identities. Companies are exploring various applications for avatars, from enterprise solutions like D-ID and Synthesia, to meeting platforms like Zoom, fashion with Glance, educational tools with Praktika, and content creation on TikTok and Captions.
However, Isaac Bratzel, the mastermind behind popular virtual influencers like Lil Miquela and Amelia 2.0, believes there's a gap in the market for high-quality avatars that not only look good but also possess unique, personalized traits. This realization inspired him to launch AvatarOS.
Bratzel's career journey took him through design roles at IPsoft, where he developed Amelia 2.0, Brud, where he created Lil Miquela, and Dapper Labs, which acquired Brud. He founded AvatarOS after leaving Dapper Labs in 2022.

AvatarOS is currently in the exploratory phase, seeking the perfect product-market fit. Bratzel acknowledges that what a company can do technologically or what's considered cool might not always align with customer needs and wants.
For M13, Peracha views this as an exploratory investment, backing a founder with a proven track record in the avatar industry.
"We're exploring the right business model through this round and aiming to gain more clarity on our path forward. Given Isaac's experience from IPsoft to Brud, he's the ideal person to lead this venture," Peracha explained.
Interestingly, he conducted part of his due diligence by conversing with an avatar of Bratzel to better understand the founder.
Bratzel emphasized that AvatarOS is focused on creating high-end 3D avatars, rather than contributing to the flood of easily generated content.
"One clear comparison is spam emails. When content creation becomes too easy, it spreads everywhere, and you need to stand out from the saturation. That's our goal in the avatar space," Bratzel shared during a call with TechCrunch.
"While there are existing technologies for avatar generation, our focus is on the avatar itself. Take Lil Miquela, for example... She's a lasting entity that goes beyond a single project and accumulates value over time," he added.
Currently, AvatarOS is onboarding beta users, offering them access to a selection of existing avatars. The startup is also rolling out a simple API, allowing clients to integrate avatars into their websites. Bratzel mentioned that these organizations can enhance avatars with large language models (LLMs) to provide information and adjust camera angles and views.
AvatarOS is currently crafting premium, customized avatars for clients. Looking ahead, the company aims to offer more tools for avatar creation and modification. Bratzel highlighted that their main differentiator will be the unique way their avatars move within their environment.
"The key for us is that humans move in distinctive ways. Most avatar solutions can create something that looks like you but moves in a generic manner. We believe humans don't move the same way, and we want to capture that uniqueness," he said.
The funding will be used to expand the team and develop a machine learning-based deformer, which will enhance the lifelike movements of their avatars.
