AI Helps Indians Sound American on Calls with Krisp
On Wednesday, the audio startup Krisp unveiled a groundbreaking feature that leverages AI to alter a user's accent during calls. Initially, the company is focusing on transforming Indian English accents into U.S. English.
According to Krisp, the accent conversion technology maintains the original voice of the speaker, only modifying phonemes to align with American accents. This feature, which has been trialed in enterprise settings, is now entering beta phase in the Krisp desktop application. Users have the flexibility to activate this feature at any point before or during a call.
Arto Minasyan, co-founder of Krisp, shared the inspiration behind this innovation, recounting his own experiences. "Many people struggle to understand my accent, even when I'm speaking English well. We believed that by changing accents, we could significantly improve communication. We've been working on this solution for two years, and we're excited to release it in beta," Minasyan explained.
However, during my test of the feature, the processed voice came across as somewhat unnatural, occasionally omitting words. Krisp acknowledged these issues as part of the beta phase, assuring users that the model would evolve and improve over time.
Krisp reports that in enterprise trials, the feature led to a 26.1% increase in sales conversion rates and a 14.8% rise in revenue per booking.

Other startups, such as GV-backed Sanas, have already implemented similar technologies on a large scale in call centers.
The company trained its model on thousands of speech samples representing various accents and dialects, using data from its meeting assistant with user consent.
Minasyan highlighted another benefit of the feature: it doesn't require any pre-training on the user's voice, as it dynamically creates a speaker profile in real time.
Krisp, which last secured funding in 2021, is set to launch iOS and Android apps later this year to enhance in-person meetings. Additionally, a new Chrome extension is in development to improve integration with Google Meet.

This AI accent switch is wild! It’s like giving your voice a Hollywood makeover in real-time. I wonder how it handles regional Indian accents—pretty cool for call centers, but does it make everyone sound like a generic American newscaster? 😄
