98% of Small Firms Utilize AI Tools to Compete Effectively

Artificial intelligence (AI) is revolutionizing how businesses leverage technology in their operations, and it's not just the big players who are reaping the benefits. Take Open AI's ChatGPT, for instance—it's now serving over 1 million business users. Even smaller enterprises are discovering the significant advantages that come with integrating AI into their workflows.
A recent nationwide survey by the US Chamber of Commerce sheds light on this trend, revealing that a staggering 98% of small businesses in the US are now using at least one AI-enabled technology platform. Moreover, the use of generative AI (gen AI) tools has surged, with 40% of small firms adopting these technologies, a near doubling from the previous year's 23%.
How AI Empowers Small Businesses
"AI is a game-changer for small businesses, often lacking the manpower and resources of larger competitors," says Jordan Crenshaw, senior vice president of the US Chamber's Technology Engagement Center. "It's heartening to see these businesses not only adopting technology but also feeling optimistic about their future, thanks to the innovative and resilient nature of these platforms."
The survey dives deep into the role of technology in helping small businesses stay competitive. Initiated in 2022, this ongoing study looks at the "types and applications of technology used by small businesses" and identifies which technologies are making the biggest impact over time.
The Rise of AI in Small Business Operations
The latest edition of the survey zeroes in on the rapid adoption of AI among small businesses. The findings are clear: "91% of businesses actively using AI believe it will contribute to their future growth, and 81% plan to ramp up their use of technology platforms."
According to the report, "technology adoption is closely tied to growth in small businesses." Those that have integrated technology platforms, such as productivity tools, digital payment systems, and accounting software, are "more likely to report growth in sales and profits over the past year, alongside an increase in their workforce."
Furthermore, the survey highlights that businesses proficient in using multiple tech platforms tend to outperform those less technologically savvy.
Technology and Business Growth
"We're observing year-over-year growth in small businesses across key performance indicators like sales, profits, and employment," the report notes. "For the third consecutive year, companies employing a diverse range of technologies are outpacing their less tech-savvy counterparts in terms of growth."
Amanda Reineke, CEO of Notice Ninja, a digital compliance company, adds, "When thoughtfully implemented, AI can significantly enhance efficiency. It's not about replacing human work but enhancing and elevating it."

AI's taking over, huh? Kinda wild that 98% of small biz are jumping on this—ChatGPT’s got a million users already! Makes me wonder if my local coffee shop’s using it to write their menu. 😄 Gotta say, it’s cool but also a bit scary how fast this tech’s spreading.
