Payroll startup Remote boosts revenue per employee by 50% without adding headcount

Remote, an Amsterdam-based payroll provider with seven years of operation, recently crossed the $300 million annual recurring revenue mark and achieved cash-flow positivity. However, the company emphasizes that the true achievement lies in its internal operations: a 50% surge in revenue per employee following the integration of AI across all organizational levels.

“As we speak, I have five different Claude instances running on my second laptop screen, building various tools — some for my personal use, but many for Remote,” CEO Job van der Voort explained to TechCrunch. This setup includes a Slack agent for summarizing discussions and experiments with agentic AI, illustrating a broader trend: Remote is generating higher revenue without expanding its workforce.

According to van der Voort, these efficiency gains stem from AI adoption that extends far beyond executive or engineering teams. Employees across all departments have been developing applications in Remote Labs, an internal marketplace built on the company’s proprietary technology. This initiative mirrors the AI capabilities now being offered to clients.

Mirroring its internal process improvements, Remote now assists clients in creating custom workflows. “We recognize that we are ahead of most companies in this regard,” van der Voort stated. “Therefore, we established Remote Build, which functions similarly to what investors term ‘forward-deployed engineers’ — specialists who work directly with customers and prospects to implement similar solutions within their own organizations.”

Van der Voort suggests these gains could compound over time. He attributes the core payroll business’s year-over-year growth of over 300% largely to AI adoption, although the company has not provided independent verification for this figure. Remote also reports serving tens of thousands of companies navigating global employment compliance, a statistic that, like its ARR milestone, is self-reported.

While managing such complexity is Remote’s core competency, staff have found relief in eliminating repetitive and bureaucratic tasks associated with paying workers in nearly every country. “Obviously, we have automated much of this; it is what we do,” van der Voort noted. “However, AI has made this process easier and arguably more enjoyable than ever before.”

Although payroll itself may not be inherently fun, van der Voort is enthusiastic about the market opportunity it presents. Despite the company’s name, which might imply a focus on distributed workforces, he clarified that Remote targets all business types, with the vast majority of its clients employing staff in traditional office settings. “We provide payroll for everyone, period.”

Remote’s competitors have largely pursued a different strategy, adopting an “all-in-one” HR platform model. Conversely, Remote views the current AI wave and the resulting commoditization of software as validation for its decision to remain focused on solving complex problems.

This strategy also involves strategic partnerships, with Remote positioning itself to allow other platforms to leverage AI. The recently launched Remote MCP, an interface based on the Model Context Protocol — a standard enabling secure AI-agent interaction with external software — grants AI agents and external platforms direct access to payroll and compliance data. This allows platforms like BambooHR and Workday to utilize Remote as their underlying engine.

This development aligns with the rise of agentic AI, which could render many traditional software interfaces obsolete in a beneficial way. “If you use ChatGPT or Claude, you can control all of Remote; if you choose to, you no longer need to interact with our platform directly,” van der Voort remarked. “I believe this represents the direction of the future.”

According to van der Voort, the next phase involves AI agents interacting directly with Remote, adhering to the stringent security standards required for handling sensitive financial and personal data. His personal AI assistant, OpenClaw — named Jim — has served as an early test case. “Jim can interact with Remote, and we designed it to be secure, ensuring I do not have to worry about my agent performing reckless actions or causing errors. He has access only to what is necessary, but cannot execute destructive commands. These are the developments that excite us, offering a glimpse into the future.”

The internal changes at Remote may also signal a broader industry shift. Like other tech firms such as Spotify, Remote has embraced AI-powered coding, with engineer contributions increasing by more than 60% over the past year. “This trend is accelerating; in the last month alone, more than 85% of all our code was written by AI.”

While this has reduced Remote’s hiring plans, it has not resulted in job cuts, according to van der Voort. He also noted that the company had not planned a major recruitment drive initially. “However, in certain departments, our original plans involved hiring more people than we actually did. [… ] What we are actively doing now is evaluating: ‘Do we truly need more staff, or should we invest more time in upskilling existing employees to use AI tools, and allocate more budget directly to AI?’”

His primary responsibility is to “ensure the company remains solvent and grows as rapidly as possible,” but he does not view rising AI costs as a concern. “Our AI expenditure is increasing, but we monitor it closely, and we are satisfied with the results; as the company becomes more efficient, we have the capacity to invest in AI and related initiatives.”

Remote’s trajectory provides one of the clearest data points in the ongoing discussion about AI’s tangible business impact. The company is not merely using AI to accelerate operations but to restructure its scaling model. Higher revenue per employee, deferred hiring, and an expanding product portfolio without proportional headcount growth represent the operating model many companies are striving to achieve.

Another reason van der Voort is pleased with AI is that it has enhanced his own role. “It adds a whole new layer of enjoyment, I would say.”
