Nvidia Denies Allegations of AI Chip Backdoor Vulnerability

Nvidia's Chief Security Officer has published a blog post firmly stating that its GPUs "do not and should not contain kill switches or backdoors." This declaration comes amidst mounting pressure from both the U.S. and China. Certain U.S. lawmakers are urging Nvidia to provide government access to its AI chips, while Chinese authorities have claimed such backdoors already exist.
David Reber Jr.'s post appears to be a direct response to U.S. legislators. In May, a bipartisan group introduced the Chip Security Act, a bill that would mandate tracking technology in chips to detect illegal international transfers. This legislation also opens the door to additional security features, including remote kill switches. Although Nvidia anticipates receiving licenses to resume sales of some AI chips in China, its most advanced hardware remains subject to strict U.S. export controls there and in other markets.
"To address potential misuse, some commentators and policymakers advocate for mandatory hardware 'kill switches' or built-in controls capable of disabling GPUs remotely without user knowledge or consent," Reber Jr. wrote. He added, "Some suspect these features might already be in place," alluding to an investigation launched in China over purported "loopholes and backdoors" in the H20 chips sold domestically.
"There is no such thing as a 'good' secret backdoor," Reber Jr. contends, "only dangerous vulnerabilities that must be eliminated." He further describes kill switches as "an open invitation for disaster," making it clear his message targets U.S. policymakers: "This is not sound policy. It is an overreaction that would severely damage America's economic and national security interests."
Both Nvidia and the U.S. government want the company to remain the leading supplier of AI chips to China. However, the prospect of direct U.S. access to the hardware could jeopardize that position. Chinese chip firms are steadily enhancing their performance and manufacturing capabilities as China seeks domestic alternatives. This trend increases the likelihood that Nvidia could be displaced in the market by competitors like Huawei—a company familiar with losing market share over allegations of government access.
