Meta Consolidates Facebook and Instagram User Support, Trials AI Assistant

Meta has announced a new centralized support hub for Facebook and Instagram users, acknowledging that previous support options have sometimes fallen short. This hub will provide tools for reporting account issues, recovering lost access, and finding answers through an AI-powered search and assistant.

The feature is currently launching worldwide for Facebook and Instagram users on both iOS and Android apps.

The new AI assistant in testing is built to provide personalized guidance for tasks like account recovery, profile management, and updating settings. It will initially launch on Facebook, with plans to expand to other Meta apps later.

Meta states its AI systems are enhancing account security, with global account hacks on Facebook and Instagram decreasing by over 30%. The AI also helps identify and prevent threats like phishing, suspicious logins, and compromised accounts.

Furthermore, Meta reports that AI has significantly reduced mistaken account deactivations and has accelerated the appeal process when errors do happen.

However, this assertion conflicts with the experiences of many users who report losing access to their accounts or Facebook Pages due to apparent system errors. Some suspect AI is the culprit, citing a lack of human review in support decisions. Affected users, especially those whose businesses or livelihoods are impacted, are increasingly considering or pursuing legal action.

The issue has grown so prevalent that a dedicated Reddit forum was created this year to assist people taking legal action against Meta over disabled accounts.

Meta believes the new hub can address these issues by centralizing recovery options and offering a more streamlined process with clearer instructions and simpler verification. The company also promises better SMS and email alerts for suspicious activity, improved device recognition, and connections to security tools like security checkups, two-factor authentication, and passkeys.

Account recovery now includes an optional selfie video verification method.

While Meta aims to simplify the user experience with this hub, relocating settings and support features can itself cause confusion. The company has frequently moved key areas like account settings and privacy controls over the years, which can disorient users who can't find features where they previously were.
