Sanders Proposes Four-Day Work Week as AI Boosts Productivity

Promoting a human-centric AI future, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) urges tech companies to deliver tangible benefits to workers instead of just touting productivity gains.
In a conversation with podcaster Joe Rogan, Sanders emphasized that time saved through AI should translate into more free hours for employees to spend with their loved ones.
“Technology should aim to uplift society as a whole, not just benefit tech owners and corporate executives,” Sanders remarked. “As a worker, you're becoming more productive thanks to AI. Rather than eliminating your job, I believe we should cut your work week to 32 hours.”
This vision would bring relief to many—but sound like a nightmare to those obsessed with bottom-line growth. After all, isn’t life all about squeezing every second to boost shareholder returns?
Corporate leaders often frame AI-driven efficiency as a way to expand output or reduce labor costs by downsizing staff. Yet for employees, the same efficiency could mean finishing their duties faster with no pay cut—freeing up precious time, like catching their child’s baseball game.
“And let’s be clear—this is not a radical proposal,” Sanders noted. “There are already firms worldwide adopting it with positive outcomes.”
For example, 61 UK companies—employing around 2,900 people—tested a four-day work week in the second half of 2022. Among the 23 businesses that shared financial results, revenues stayed relatively stable, increasing by an average of 1.4% during the trial.

Boston, MA | July 15 REGISTER NOW Kickstarter has maintained a four-day work week since 2021, while Microsoft Japan’s 2019 trial of a shorter work week reportedly boosted productivity by 40%.
“We should harness technology to improve workers' lives,” Sanders concluded. “That means giving you more time for family, friends, learning, or whatever you choose.”

Interesting proposal, but how do we ensure companies actually pass on the productivity gains to workers? I've seen too many cases where AI just leads to more layoffs and pressure on the remaining staff. A four-day week sounds great, but without strong regulations, it might just become unpaid overtime in disguise. Sanders is right to push for a human-centric approach—tech should improve lives, not just profits. Let's see if this gains real traction beyond political talk.
