The Unspoken Expenses of Using AI Video Generators Revealed

I recently had the opportunity to test an AI video generation platform for a potential review on ZDNET. While I won't name the specific company, my experience sheds light on the broader challenges faced by similar services in the market.
Curious about the platform, I signed up and created an account. My initial attempt at generating a video was less than impressive, leading me to wonder if my prompt was the issue. Eager to give it another shot, I was surprised to find that my free credits had already been used up. After reaching out to the company, they graciously added more credits to my account.
Armed with a fresh batch of credits, I dove back into refining my prompts, determined to create something worthwhile. After generating around 20 clips, a clear pattern emerged: roughly 90% of the videos were unusable. The catch? Each video, regardless of its quality, consumed credits.
To illustrate, let's consider a hypothetical scenario where you purchase 100 credits for $100. If each video costs 10 credits, you'd get 10 videos for your money. But if 90% of those videos are useless, you're left with just one usable video, yet you've still paid for ten. I raised this concern with my contact at the company, suggesting a pricing model where users are only charged for videos they download. Unfortunately, their response was that the high operational costs necessitated passing these expenses onto consumers.
The financial aspect of this model is reminiscent of a Las Vegas casino. You keep investing money and hoping for a win, despite the odds being stacked against you. It's a gamble, and one that can lead to significant losses in both time and money.
Not all AI video generation services follow the same pricing model, however. For instance, InVideo AI, Pictory, and Synthesia charge based on the minutes of AI generation used, while others like AI Studios offer unlimited video creation for a flat rate. Yet, my experiences across various platforms were consistently underwhelming. Whether using detailed, simple, or AI-generated prompts, the results were often disappointing.
I can appreciate the financial challenges these companies face. Running such services likely involves hefty costs, including payments to third parties for access to their LLMs and the energy-intensive infrastructure required to support them. However, charging for unusable content is a risky strategy that can alienate customers.
The takeaway here is clear: you get what you pay for, but not always in the way you'd hope. As economic pressures mount, it's crucial to scrutinize the true cost of these services. Are you willing to pay for a platform that delivers only 10% usable content? Always take advantage of free trials to gauge a service's effectiveness. If a platform doesn't offer a trial, it might be wise to look elsewhere.
You wouldn't buy a car without a test drive or a house without a visit. The same principle applies to AI video generation services. While not all platforms are identical, many rely on similar LLMs, making the outcome somewhat unpredictable. If you're considering AI-generated video content, weigh the risks and consider whether hiring a dedicated video production company might be a more reliable investment.
