Tessell Secures $60M Funding to Enhance Scalable Data Management

Tessell, a dynamic startup focused on revolutionizing multi-cloud database management, has successfully raised $60 million in a new funding round spearheaded by WestBridge Capital. This financial boost comes as Tessell gears up to broaden its market reach and introduce an innovative AI-powered conversational database management service.
In today's data-driven world, the challenge of efficiently managing and storing vast amounts of information is increasingly daunting for companies. Traditional database solutions often lack the flexibility needed to operate seamlessly across various cloud platforms. Moreover, the costs associated with managed database services can be prohibitively high, especially for those requiring top-tier performance.
Enter Tessell, which is poised to address these issues head-on with its cutting-edge platform. Founded just four years ago, the company benefits from the extensive database kernel expertise of its co-founders, aiming to surpass the capabilities of existing relational database services, including Amazon's RDS.
“Tessell is a tessellation of enterprise data,” explained co-founder and CEO Bala Kuchibhotla in an exclusive interview. Kuchibhotla, who previously spent over a decade at Oracle and four years at Nutanix, identified a critical gap in the market for reimagined operational data management after observing the struggles companies face with current solutions.
Tessell boasts an impressive performance claim of being 10 times faster than traditional database management services while offering substantial cost savings of 64-73% over a three-year total cost of ownership. This efficiency is driven by Tessell's use of NVMe infrastructure, which eliminates the conventional input-output operations per second (IOPS) metering, delivering high IOPS and low latency with predictable pricing. Additionally, Tessell ensures zero downtime during migrations and maintains database availability even if a cloud service experiences an outage.
The startup's platform is designed to be versatile, supporting all four major cloud service providers—AWS, Google Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud—as well as leading database engines such as MySQL, Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MongoDB.
“If you are an AI application, you can spin up or spin down the databases that you need on the Tessell infrastructure,” Kuchibhotla shared with TechCrunch. He also highlighted Tessell's support for both traditional databases with vector extensions and standalone vector databases.
Tessell's Funding and Future Plans
Tessell's latest all-equity Series B round saw participation from B37 Ventures, Rocketship.vc, and existing investor Lightspeed Venture Partners. The funds will be instrumental in developing Tessell's AI-powered conversational technology, which aims to further streamline data management processes.
Based in San Ramon with an additional office in Bengaluru, Tessell currently employs around 143 people and serves 40 customers, with two-thirds located in India. Its clientele includes notable names such as Moody’s, Aditya Birla Capital, Tata Capital, Jubilant Ingrevia, and Forbes.
With the newly acquired funds, Tessell plans to expand into Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, enhance its market strategy to grow its presence in the U.S. and India, and invest further in R&D to bolster its service offerings. Looking ahead, Tessell is also exploring the possibility of entering the analytics sector, allowing companies to seamlessly integrate data from platforms like Snowflake, Google BigQuery, or Microsoft Fabric for analysis on its platform.
