RFK Jr. Report 'Make America Healthy Again' Plagued by Suspected AI Content

Questions have been raised about the sources cited in Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s controversial "Make America Healthy Again" commission report. Evidence suggests the use of artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT, which casts doubt on the reliability of this White House-commissioned analysis on declining U.S. life expectancy.
An investigation by NOTUS revealed dozens of flaws in the MAHA report, including broken hyperlinks, incorrect publication details, and inaccurate or missing author names. Several studies were either misrepresented to support the report's conclusions or, more seriously, were completely fabricated. NOTUS identified at least seven cited sources that were entirely fictitious.
A separate The Washington Post inquiry found that at least 37 of the 522 citations were duplicated throughout the document. Tellingly, the web addresses for several references contained "oaicite," an identifier added by OpenAI to responses generated by its AI models like ChatGPT, strongly indicating the tool's use in the report's preparation.
Generative AI is prone to producing false or inaccurate information, a phenomenon known as "hallucination." This could account for the numerous errors, as chatbots have been implicated in similar citation problems in legal documents submitted by AI researchers and the very companies developing the technology. Despite this, RFK Jr. has been a vocal proponent of the "AI revolution," stating during a May House committee meeting that his team is "already using these new technologies to manage healthcare data more efficiently and securely."
During a Thursday briefing, press secretary Karoline Leavitt addressed concerns over citation accuracy while avoiding any discussion of AI tools. Leavitt characterized the mistakes as "formatting issues" and maintained that the health report's findings are "supported by sound science that has historically been overlooked by the federal government."
The Washington Post reports that the MAHA report file was updated on Thursday to remove some "oaicite" markers and replace non-existent sources with valid citations. In a statement to the publication, Department of Health and Human Services spokesman Andrew Nixon said "minor citation and formatting errors have been corrected, but the substance of the MAHA report is unchanged — it remains a historic, transformative federal assessment to understand the chronic disease epidemic impacting our nation's children."
