OpenAI's much-anticipated Advanced Voice Mode, highlighted during their Spring Launch event, has finally moved out of alpha and is now accessible to all ChatGPT Plus and Team users. This exciting update was announced by OpenAI on Tuesday, marking the beginning of a gradual rollout that promises to transform the voice interaction experience. The Advanced Voice Mode introduces a smarter voice assistant capable of being interrupted and responding to users' emotions, enhancing the conversational flow. Alongside this, OpenAI is rolling out five new voices—Arbor, Maple, Sol, Spruce, and Vale—available in both Standard and Advanced Voice Modes. These additions are designed to provide a more personalized and engaging interaction. > Advanced Voice is rolling out to all Plus and Team users in the ChatGPT app over the course of the week. > While you’ve been patiently waiting, we’ve added Custom Instructions, Memory, five new voices, and improved accents. > It can also say “Sorry I’m late” in over 50 languages. pic.twitter.com/APOqqhXtDg > > — OpenAI (@OpenAI) September 24, 2024 The rollout will initially focus on ChatGPT Plus and Team users, with plans to extend access to Enterprise and Edu tiers next week. Users will receive a notification via a pop-up message next to the Voice Mode option within the ChatGPT interface, indicating their access to this feature. Since the alpha release in July, OpenAI has been hard at work refining the Advanced Voice Mode. Improvements include enhanced accents in foreign languages and smoother conversation speeds. Visually, the mode now features an animated blue sphere, adding a fresh touch to the interface. To tailor the experience further, the Advanced Voice Mode now incorporates Custom Instructions and Memory. These features enable the voice assistant to consider user-specific criteria, resulting in more relevant and personalized responses. However, one limitation remains from the alpha version: users will not be able to utilize the multimodal capabilities of Voice Mode, such as screen content assistance or using the phone camera for contextual responses, as demonstrated in the video below. OpenAI has taken extensive measures to ensure the safety of the voice capabilities, testing them with over 100 external red teamers across 45 languages. In August, the company released its GPT-4o System Card, a detailed report on the LLM's safety based on risk assessments, external red-teaming, and more, which includes evaluations of the Advanced Voice Mode. To access the Advanced Voice Mode, you can subscribe to ChatGPT Plus for $20 per month. This subscription not only grants access to the new voice feature but also offers additional benefits such as advanced data analysis, unlimited image generation, five times more messages for GPT-4o, and the ability to create custom GPTs. Interestingly, just one week after OpenAI unveiled the Advanced Voice Mode in May, Google introduced a similar feature called Gemini Live. This conversational voice assistant, powered by LLMs, aims to enhance conversation flow and understanding. Earlier this month, Google made Gemini Live available for free to all Android users, providing an alternative for those interested in similar voice assistant technology without the need for a paid subscription.

Finally got access to the voice mode on ChatGPT! It’s super cool and works surprisingly well. A bit pricey for non-premium users though 😅

Finally got to try OpenAI's Voice Mode! It's pretty cool, but I wish it was faster. The voice sounds natural, which is a big plus. I'm a premium user, so I got early access, but I think it needs a bit more polish before it's perfect. Still, it's a step in the right direction! 🎤
