OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Health as Weekly Health Queries Hit 230 Million
On Wednesday, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Health, a dedicated environment for users to discuss health topics with the AI chatbot.
Users already frequently turn to ChatGPT with health and wellness queries, with OpenAI reporting over 230 million such questions weekly. The new Health product isolates these conversations from other chats, ensuring your health context does not appear in standard interactions.
If a user initiates a health-related chat outside the designated section, the AI will guide them to move it to the Health space.
Within the Health environment, the AI may reference information shared in standard chats. For instance, if you previously asked for help creating a marathon training plan, the AI would recognize you as a runner when discussing fitness goals in Health.
ChatGPT Health will also support integration with personal health data or records from apps like Apple Health, Function, and MyFitnessPal. OpenAI emphasizes that conversations within Health will not be used to train its AI models.
In a blog post, OpenAI's Chief of Applications, Fidji Simo, described ChatGPT Health as a response to systemic healthcare challenges such as high costs, access barriers, overbooked physicians, and fragmented care.
While the traditional healthcare system has limitations, relying on AI chatbots for medical guidance introduces its own set of risks. Large language models like ChatGPT generate responses based on statistical likelihood, not factual accuracy, as they lack an inherent understanding of truth. These models are also susceptible to producing incorrect or fabricated information.
OpenAI's terms of service explicitly state that its models are "not intended for use in the diagnosis or treatment of any health condition."
The feature is scheduled to be released in the next few weeks.
