Microsoft's Skepticism on AGI Contrasts with OpenAI Partnership

Since OpenAI introduced ChatGPT over two years ago, it has remained a leader in the AI industry, continuously enhancing its models and launching new products. The company shows no signs of slowing down, with its sights firmly set on achieving Artificial General Intelligence (AGI)—a form of AI that possesses autonomous, human-level intelligence.

"Our mission is to ensure that AGI benefits all of humanity," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman stated in a recent blog post. "In some sense, AGI is just another tool in this ever-taller scaffolding of human progress we are building together."

Interestingly, generative AI is now hitting its stride, according to Databricks' chief AI scientist.

However, OpenAI's key strategic partner, Microsoft, has chosen a different path. In a recent interview, CEO Satya Nadella explained that Microsoft is not pursuing AGI, viewing it as overhyped. Given their long-standing partnership and Microsoft's significant investments in OpenAI, one might wonder how these two organizations continue to collaborate effectively.

During an SXSW panel discussion titled "Building Trustworthy AI: Evolving Safety Practices for GenAI," Microsoft's CPO of Responsible AI, Sarah Bird, provided insights into the dynamics between the two companies. Despite their differing strategies, she emphasized that there is no underlying tension.

"You might think there would be some tension between those two, but in practice, it doesn't seem to materialize that way," Bird explained.

Bird believes that OpenAI's ambitious goal of achieving AGI encourages the company to "dream big" and innovate in ways that the world hasn't seen before, rather than just making small, incremental improvements. She argues that this drive and focus are essential for groundbreaking AI development.

Meanwhile, Google has launched Gemini with Personalization, outpacing Apple in the race for personalized AI.

Microsoft's decision to steer clear of AGI stems from its focus on creating AI that works alongside humans rather than replacing them. A notable example is Microsoft's Copilot, which serves as an "AI companion" assisting users across various Microsoft platforms, including Microsoft 365 and Github.

"For me, [AGI] is a non-goal, and that's true for Microsoft as well. We have a lot of humans, which is pretty cool, so I would rather have a technology that augments human capabilities and does the things that humans either aren't great at or humans don't want to do," Bird remarked.
