Meta Confirms Rarely That Its Product Design Was Deeply Influenced by OpenClaw After Being Accused of Copying It
Nat Friedman, product manager at Meta’s Super Intelligent Lab (MSL), recently clarified on X that while their AI agent, Muse, was “deeply influenced by OpenClaw” in its design, it was “built from the ground up.”
This statement followed a viral post by Ansh Nanda, co-founder of an AI application, who asserted that “Muse is essentially OpenClaw for everyday users.” Nanda also shared a conversation with Muse, in which the AI admitted that the resemblance between its system files and OpenClaw was not a “coincidence” but an intentional “match.”
Community members later discovered that Muse contains a SOUL.md file—a plain text Markdown configuration defining the AI’s personality, communication style, values, behavioral boundaries, and expertise. The content closely mirrors OpenClaw’s corresponding file. When questioned, Friedman did not deny the similarity, stating only, “We believe Peter (Steinberger, creator of OpenClaw) got everything completely right.”

Friedman, former CEO of GitHub, joined Meta last year alongside Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang. He revealed that after testing OpenClaw in January, he purchased hundreds of Mac minis for the MSL team, many of whom became avid users of OpenClaw and similar personal agent software. The objective behind developing Muse was to create a product akin to OpenClaw—safe, reliable, user-friendly, and scalable to billions of users.
As OpenClaw is an open-source project, it is unsurprising that Meta drew inspiration from its design. OpenAI had previously recruited its founder earlier this year. This move aligns with Meta’s established strategy of acquiring promising products and integrating their best features, most notably seen in the adoption of Snapchat Stories.
