Google's Gemma open-source large model surpasses 1 billion downloads, expanding from space exploration into medicine
Google DeepMind has announced that the Gemma model series, built to empower developers in creating responsible and innovative AI solutions globally, has officially crossed the one billion download milestone. Over the last two years, developers have created more than 100,000 variations of Gemma, fostering a vibrant innovation ecosystem known as the "Gemmaverse."
Offering high flexibility, Gemma can be deployed across diverse and complex environments, ranging from local devices and edge infrastructure to space. Gemma has officially reached outer space, with teams like NASA, Satlyt, and Starcloud running the model in orbit to support on-board image analysis, optimize limited downlink bandwidth, and manage interstellar communication. This demonstrates its strong capability in handling complex reasoning tasks within extreme, resource-constrained environments.

Gemma has also made significant strides in ground-based civil and medical research. India's National Health Authority (NHA) integrated Gemma4 with Google's open-source medical data toolkit into the Aarogya Setu 2.0 app, which boasts over 100 million downloads. This integration helps users convert complex medical reports into standardized digital formats and securely share health data across institutions. Additionally, researchers from Yale University and Google developed the C2S-Scale model based on Gemma, successfully discovering and verifying a new cancer treatment pathway in living cells—a historic breakthrough for AI-driven medical research. Furthermore, the specialized medical model MedGemma is widely used in clinical settings globally, including supporting outpatient triage at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences and assisting healthcare workers in rural Uganda.
The model's impact extends to marine biology as well. In collaboration with the Georgia Institute of Technology and the Wild Dolphin Project, researchers created DolphinGemma, which processes complex dolphin vocalizations and predicts sound sequences, opening new avenues for cross-species communication research.
