Google Launches Offline AI Dictation App
Update (April 7, 10:30 PM PT): The company has updated its app store listing, removing mentions of an Android version. However, it also noted that an iOS keyboard feature is coming soon.
On Monday, Google quietly launched a new offline-first dictation app for iOS called "Google AI Edge Eloquent," positioning it against competitors like Wispr Flow, SuperWhisper, and Willow.
The free app allows you to start dictating once its Gemma-based automatic speech recognition (ASR) models are downloaded. It displays a live transcription, and when you pause, it automatically removes filler words such as "um" and "ah" while polishing the text.
Below the transcript, you'll find options like "Key points," "Formal," "Short," and "Long" to reformat the text.

You can enable a local-only processing mode by turning off cloud connectivity. (With cloud mode on, the app uses Gemini models in the cloud for text refinement.) Google AI Edge Eloquent can optionally import specific keywords, names, and jargon from your Gmail account. You also have the ability to add custom words to its dictionary.
The app maintains a history of all transcription sessions, which you can search through. It displays metrics from your last session, including words dictated, your words-per-minute speed, and the total word count.
"Google AI Edge Eloquent is an advanced dictation app designed to convert natural speech into polished, professional text. Unlike basic software that transcribes every stumble and filler word, Eloquent uses AI to understand your intent. It automatically edits out 'ums,' 'uhs,' and mid-sentence corrections, delivering clean and accurate prose," states the company's App Store description.

Although currently an iOS exclusive, the App Store description mentions an Android version. (We have contacted Google for details and will update this story accordingly.)
According to the description, Eloquent promises "seamless Android integration," allowing it to be set as the default keyboard for system-wide use in any text field. Additionally, the app will support a floating button feature for easy access to transcription from anywhere, similar to Wispr Flow's implementation on Android.
AI-powered transcription apps are growing in popularity as speech-to-text models improve. With this experimental release, Google is entering this competitive space. A successful test could lead to enhanced transcription features being integrated into Android as well.
