Microsoft Edge Unveils AI APIs for Web App Development

Microsoft introduces new Edge APIs, enabling developers to integrate AI features into web apps using built-in Edge models.
Announced at Build 2025, these AI APIs align with Google Chrome’s built-in AI capabilities, positioning Edge as a competitive alternative for developers.
Edge’s APIs grant websites and browser extensions access to Phi 4 mini, a 3.8 billion-parameter AI model released in February, optimized for math tasks with a blend of human and synthetic training data.
Parameters reflect a model’s problem-solving ability, with larger models typically outperforming smaller ones. Compact models like Phi 4 mini, however, run efficiently on devices such as laptops and mobiles.
Edge also rolls out AI writing APIs for text generation, summarization, and editing. A translator API for AI-driven language translation is slated for release in the coming months.
“These APIs aim to become web standards, functioning across platforms, browsers, and AI models,” Microsoft stated in a TechCrunch press release. “They ensure privacy and security for sensitive data through on-device processing, avoiding external cloud reliance.”
All new AI APIs are accessible in Edge’s Canary and Dev channels.
