ByteDance shifts AI focus to enterprise as Doubao hits 200 million users, yet revenue remains under $1 million
Doubaobao, ByteDance’s AI offering, has surpassed 200 million daily active users in the first half of the year, yet generates less than 1 million yuan in daily revenue, primarily through e-commerce commissions. This narrow monetization model leaves high computing costs as a significant financial burden.
According to the report, leveraging Huoshan Engine’s public API pricing and user behavior data, Doubaobao’s daily computing expenses reached tens of millions of yuan by May, highlighting a stark disparity between operational costs and income.

Following a visit by a ByteDance executive to Anthropic two months ago, the company has recalibrated its AI strategy. Resources are gradually shifting from consumer-focused apps like Doubaobao toward enterprise-oriented services.
Seedance, a ByteDance subsidiary, serves as a key example of this enterprise focus. With annual recurring revenue (ARR) nearing $2 billion (approximately 14.3 billion yuan) and monthly earnings exceeding 1 billion yuan, Seedance helps offset Doubaobao’s computing costs. However, its revenue growth has recently decelerated.
Analysts suggest this shift marks a transition in AI commercialization from user-scale expansion to enterprise-driven payments and computing efficiency. Faced with high costs and unoptimized income models, large model providers are reassessing the balance between consumer and enterprise segments to secure sustainable growth.
