Apple unveils iOS 27 with local AI and Google partnership boosting Siri
The Information recently highlighted Apple’s strategic approach to integrating artificial intelligence into the upcoming OS 27. By leveraging Google’s Gemini model to train a more efficient, lightweight AI, Apple aims to deliver robust local edge AI capabilities without compromising user privacy. This model distillation process enables the smaller, device-based model to mimic the performance of its larger counterpart, significantly lowering computational costs.

Apple’s AI engineers are currently focused on using Google’s Gemini architecture to instruct a streamlined version optimized for mobile devices. This strategy ensures quicker Siri response times while safeguarding user data, aligning with the company’s longstanding commitment to privacy-first design.
Given that the full Gemini model contains tens of thousands of parameters, the computational demands are too high for Apple’s Private Compute infrastructure to handle entirely. Consequently, Apple plans to route certain Siri requests in iOS 27 to Google Cloud, utilizing the licensed Gemini model for processing. While cloud-based processing may introduce slight latency, it offers enhanced security for sensitive user information.
To further bolster data protection, Apple has recently approved the integration of NVIDIA’s confidential computing technology. This innovation encrypts data during processing, ensuring that even when operations occur in the cloud, user information remains securely shielded.
In its quest for more powerful AI capabilities, Apple is actively engaging with startups to help minimize AI model sizes. The company previously explored acquiring Liquid AI, a firm specializing in local AI model execution. Through these initiatives, Apple seeks to strike an optimal balance between superior user experience and robust security.
