Recent reports reveal the depth of Apple’s partnership with Google in artificial intelligence. The upcoming iOS 27 will prioritize privacy by focusing on local edge AI processing. To boost performance without compromising user data, Apple is employing knowledge distillation, leveraging Google’s robust Gemini large language model to train its own lightweight edge AI.
This distillation method transfers insights from a massive model to a smaller one, enabling on-device AI to match large-model performance while drastically cutting computational costs. Users benefit from quicker edge AI responses and default local data handling, reinforcing Apple’s commitment to security. To further shrink model sizes for local use, Apple has targeted relevant startups and previously explored acquiring Liquid AI, a specialist in this niche.
However, the full Gemini model, with trillions of parameters, demands immense computing power that Apple’s private cloud infrastructure cannot fully support. Leaks suggest that to ease server load, iOS 27’s Siri will route select user queries to Google Cloud, utilizing an authorized version of the Gemini model for processing.
To uphold its privacy standards during cloud operations, Apple has approved NVIDIA’s confidential computing technology. This method encrypts data while GPUs process it, slightly slowing cloud AI queries but significantly boosting sensitive information protection. If adopted, future Apple devices relying on cloud AI will depend heavily on the synergy between Google Cloud and NVIDIA’s AI hardware.
