Anthropic launches Claude for Healthcare after OpenAI debuts ChatGPT Health

Following OpenAI's launch of ChatGPT Health, Anthropic announced on Sunday the introduction of Claude for Healthcare, a suite of tools designed for providers, payers, and patients.
Similar to ChatGPT Health, Claude for Healthcare enables users to sync health data from their phones, smartwatches, and other platforms (both OpenAI and Anthropic have stated that their models will not use this data for training). However, Anthropic's product claims to be more sophisticated than ChatGPT Health, which appears more focused on delivering a patient-facing chat experience as it rolls out incrementally.
While some industry experts express concern about the role of hallucination-prone LLMs in providing medical advice to clients, Anthropic's "agent skills" show considerable promise.
Claude has incorporated what it calls "connectors," granting the AI access to platforms and databases that can accelerate research processes and report generation for payers and providers. These include the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Coverage Database; the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision (ICD-10); the National Provider Identifier Standard; and PubMed.
In a blog post, Anthropic explained that Claude for Healthcare could leverage its connectors to expedite prior authorization review—the process where a doctor submits additional information to an insurance provider to determine coverage for a medication or treatment.
"Clinicians frequently report spending more time on documentation and paperwork than on actual patient care," Anthropic CPO Mike Krieger noted during a product presentation.
For doctors, submitting prior authorization documents is more of an administrative burden than a task requiring specialized training and expertise. Automating this process makes more sense than automating the delivery of medical advice… though Claude will handle that as well.
