American Federation of Teachers Calls for Ban on AI Systems and iPads in Elementary Classrooms
The American Federation of Teachers, the second-largest teachers' union in the U.S., has launched a major campaign urging schools to prohibit AI systems in elementary classrooms. It also recommends keeping devices like iPads away from young students to reinforce the central role of human teachers in early education.
In a speech at the National Press Club, union president Randi Weingarten outlined ten core demands. The most notable is an immediate ban on AI systems interfering with daily teaching in elementary schools, along with a proposal that children from preschool through second grade avoid screens entirely.
Concerns That AI Companions Are Replacing Real Friends
Additionally, the union strongly recommends that students under 16 avoid exposure to or use of companion chatbots. Many U.S. schools are currently adopting chatbots too quickly, a trend that has sparked widespread concern and anxiety among educators.
In an interview, Weingarten said that if this issue is not addressed clearly from an educational standpoint, technology misuse could cause the education sector to lose an entire generation of children. She stressed that early-grade teaching and learning rely on interpersonal interaction and should not be disrupted by artificial intelligence.
Rationally Seeking a Balance Between Technology and Humanity
Despite its clear stance, the American Federation of Teachers stresses that this is not a blanket rejection of technology. The union insists it is not a "holy war" to ban AI entirely, nor about destroying school Chromebooks. Instead, the goal is to harness technology's benefits while minimizing potential harm to young children.
A year-long study by the Brookings Institution's Global Education Center has confirmed these concerns. The report notes that AI's entry into education poses significant risks to children's cognitive and social development, as more children grow accustomed to using AI robots in place of real friends.
