Meta's Muse outpaces ChatGPT in early mobile launch
New data suggests Meta’s latest AI app, Muse, could become the social giant’s next major success. According to recent estimates from Appfigures, Muse has been downloaded on mobile devices more times in its first twelve days than ChatGPT did in the twelve days following its launch. (This data covers only the U.S. and Canada markets.)
The firm also found that Muse has more daily active users than ChatGPT had at the same stage.
Until now, making a direct comparison between these two apps has been challenging due to their different launch strategies. ChatGPT was released globally but only on iOS, whereas Muse is available on both Apple’s App Store and Google Play, but only in the U.S. and Canada.
To ensure a fair comparison, Appfigures analyzed iOS data for the U.S. and Canada for both apps during their first twelve days. In this segment, Muse recorded 1.8 million downloads compared to ChatGPT’s 1.3 million.
Overall, Muse achieved 2.8 million total global installs in its first 12 days, the firm stated. Its growth shows no signs of slowing; Muse has risen from its initial No. 2 spot on the U.S. App Store immediately after launch to No. 1, as reported by Business Insider on Friday. This surge places it above ChatGPT, the outlet noted.

Additionally, Appfigures’ data shows that Muse’s U.S. daily active users now exceed those of ChatGPT at the same point after its launch. When comparing U.S. mobile app daily active users, Muse leads with 642,000 daily users, compared to 231,000 for ChatGPT at the time.
Recognizing that Muse is available on both iOS and Android, while ChatGPT launched on iOS only, Appfigures narrowed the comparison to iOS alone. Even so, Muse performs better with 359,000 daily active users on iOS, still surpassing ChatGPT’s figures from that period.
Appfigures provides third-party estimates for app downloads and active users; it does not have direct access to Meta’s internal data. However, even if these numbers are only approximate, they suggest Muse could become Meta’s newest top app.
Meta already mastered its cross-promotion strategy with Instagram’s Threads, which now boasts over 500 million users, thanks to heavy marketing and integrations within Meta’s largest apps, including Instagram and Facebook. Muse is likely to receive a similar boost, given its connectivity with both platforms. It also operates within WhatsApp, potentially providing another advantage.
While Appfigures cannot see Meta’s cross-promotion efforts or ads directly, it noted that over 95% of Muse’s users are also Facebook users and 63% are Instagram users.
Meta, which has been asked for comment, has not yet released public figures regarding Muse’s early adoption.
