Amazon Buys Humanoid Robot Maker Fauna Robotics, Keeps Selling Sprout
Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that Amazon has finalized its acquisition of the New York-based startup Fauna Robotics last week, marking the tech giant's entry into the consumer humanoid robot market. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
An Amazon spokesperson expressed enthusiasm for Fauna's mission to "create powerful, safe, and enjoyable robots for everyone." The company intends to further Fauna's business objectives and will make the Sprout robot available to external research and development partners. Around 50 Fauna employees, including its founders, will join Amazon, with the unit continuing to operate as "Fauna Robotics, an Amazon company."

Fauna Robotics' flagship product is the humanoid robot named Sprout. Standing approximately 3.5 feet tall (about 1 meter or 107 centimeters) and weighing just 50 pounds (around 23 kilograms), it is designed to be lightweight, soft, and approachable for social environments like homes and schools. Sprout can walk, grasp objects, interact with people, and even dance, assisting with everyday tasks such as tidying up toys or retrieving items. Priced at $50,000, it is positioned as a user-friendly humanoid robot for both consumers and businesses, while also offering extensive accessibility for software developers.
