Taco Bell AI Drive-Thru Faces Trolls and Tech Glitches in Early Testing

Taco Bell's ambitious initiative to implement AI voice assistants across hundreds of drive-thru locations has encountered unexpected challenges. Chief Digital and Technology Officer Dane Mathews acknowledged to The Wall Street Journal that the company is reassessing deployment strategies following customer complaints on social media and viral videos of people attempting to manipulate the system – including one instance of someone ordering 18,000 water cups.
"We're gathering valuable insights—to be completely transparent," Mathews told WSJ. "Similar to other implementations, the system occasionally falls short of expectations but also delivers impressive results that exceed them."
The fast-food chain has installed the AI technology in more than 500 U.S. locations since announcing the drive-thru automation project last year. Taco Bell joins competitors like McDonald's, Wendy's and White Castle in exploring AI applications for quick-service restaurants.
