SpaceXAI Merger Triggers Exodus of Over 50 Key Staff, Pre-training Team Dwindles to Few
SpaceXAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence division, has been hit by a significant talent exodus following its merger and rebranding. Since February, over 50 core researchers and engineers have left, shrinking the pre-training team to just a handful of people. According to The Information, departing employees include key figures in critical areas like coding, world models, and Grok voice, such as former team lead Jun Tang Zhuang. Now, Meta and Mira Murati's new venture, Thinking Machine Labs, have become the primary destinations for these top talents, attracting at least 11 and 7 former xAI employees, respectively.

The large-scale talent departure is closely tied to the company's culture and internal shifts. In February, SpaceX acquired xAI and installed a new leadership team, with the entity officially rebranded as SpaceXAI earlier this month—a move that triggered organizational disruption. Internal sources say Musk's "extreme work culture" and unrealistic delivery timelines forced shortcuts in model development, leading technical elites to question the company's ability to produce cutting-edge models. Additionally, SpaceX's regular stock liquidity opportunities and high IPO expectations have objectively made it easier for employees seeking career changes.
